The offending player was on the near side of the field as the ball was kicked to the far side.
Didn't y'all just love that call for an onside kick there? I never even thought about it, but couldn't help but scream w/ delight when it happened. I knew we had a coach then and couldn't wait to see how the game plan developed. Isn't it great to HAVE a game plan and modify it as required as the game progresses. I'm SO excited about this team!!!!!!
They could call offsides on about 90% of kickoffs, but they don't. It is different when someone tries on onside kick though. They scrutinize it much harder. Plus, our kicker kind of paused right before he kicked it (in order to fake out Hawaii's front line). Tough call.
If you are on the opposite side and you know that it's coming, then you should make sure to stay 2 yards behind the line. Don't even be close enough for the refs to point you out.
When the play happened, I thought, oh *crud*, he shanked it. Then I saw Wheeler catch the ball and that it was awesome.
I liked the GUTS our coach showed. That took stones. We haven't seen that kind of audacity since Crowton left in 98. Audacity is an essential element in sports....and if you don't have it, you are waiting for someone else to attack you.
Coach Dooley further proved he was in this for the win when he went for it late in the 4th quarter at the 50. Mr. Bicknell would certainly have punted and OPTED for over time. Not Dooley.
Then...going for two....WOW! What an alpha dog! Good days are ahead! NO question!
