What is going in behind Dowlings? I see some activity there.
The only thing that has confirmed and they are getting ready for is a hotel. It is going beside the Assembly of God Church and in front of that body of water they call a "pond." The owner of the property told me a while back that it is a Hilton property but that could have changed between then and now.
I've been trying to figure out what the "pond" is supposed to look ultimately look like.
There is a bowling and family entertainment center coming to Ruston but it is not being built by the group I was partnered with. There is a guy out of Baton Rouge named Daniel Lundquist who is heading up the bowling center project. The name of this place is "Atlantis." I have seen his business plan and know a few of his investors personally. This will be a very, very nice place and will definitely help put Ruston on the map even more. When my partners and investors and I found out that this other group was coming to Ruston, we made a financial and personal decision to pass on taking such a huge risk. We simply could not afford to have a $4 million + project compete against someone with deeper pockets than we have. They are building this place on the land that is cleared past Northside Furniture and Blue Bell Creamery.
Damn, I love me some Blue Bell Ice Cream. Even made a special trip once to Brenham to see the "Happy Cows".

Gotta say, tho; I'll pass on the Blue Bell for da ribs at Dowlings !!!
GO, DAWGS ! ! !
Chou,
My business partners, investors, bankers, and the SBA were set and ready to sign the deal with Brunswick to bring a first-class bowling and family entertainment center to North Louisiana. I heard the rumor about this other group also coming and did a lot of questioning as to who it was, who all was involved, where they were from, so on and so forth. After looking at the situation and knowing that I am not independently wealthy and could not take such a huge financial risk, I had to make a decision whether to press on or abandon our plans for the time being. It is unfortunate because I believe wholeheartedly in "local ownership." Not just people who move to Ruston to open a business, but people who have lived and grown up around here. I personally prefer to support those businesses as much as possible because I know how hard it is to run a small business in Ruston. And in many cases, the owners are people whom I or my family has known for a very long time. There are many other details relating to the Ruston/Lincoln Chamber of Commerce and the Lincoln Parish Convention and Visitor's Bureau that I had that I will not go into detail with on a public board. I will only say that I am extremely disappointed in the fact that I will not be able to be involved with this project here in Ruston.
OK here's a question for ya. How was Dowlings Smokehouse acquired? Being that that is my surname I've always had an affinity for the place. When I was at Tech I believe the owners were named Dowling, was that the case? and do they still have any interest in the business. No criticism here just a fan and interested party.
Mr. J.L. Dowling (the original owner of Dowling's Smokehouse from 1973 to 1995 when it was on the service road) is my grandfather. He is my mom's dad. I moved back from Dallas in early 2003 to re-open the Smokehouse, opened in October 2003, and 8 months later he passed away. This month marks the 4th year of my being in business.
I will be experiencing Dowling's for the first time ever next Saturday around noon. I will be bringing the wife and the baby girl. What is the best thing on the menu?
I like the rib and cheese but I've heard the scatterload is good too.
You can't go wrong.
I asked this several years ago. What was the name of the barbecue place just off campus in the 1950s-60s? The owner was fairly old and said to be blind. He let people pay in a big bowl or something and make their own change. In my mind I remember the flavor and would recognize it if anyone froze a jar of sauce!
