man, you aren't that old. I can remember a few pizza places before Johnny's. Even before Shakey's. There was Cushino's which was located in front of the A&P, the first Pizza Inn, which turned into Pioneer Pizza was in the building later occupied by Wong's. The first Johnny's was in the building across from Bogard Hall.
Thanks. I guess I'm not as old as I feel sometimes. I seem to remember a different Johnny's somewhere, but couldn't remember where it was located. Is the Wong's you're talking about the round building that was next to the old Burger King? That was probably the late '70's, so my recollection could be off a bit. Pioneer Pizza rings a bell, but I would be lying if I said I remembered it.
What about Pizza Tech and all that greasy goodness? Take you half a roll of paper towels to sop up all the grease on top! Yum
mildawg, I'm not from Ruston originally, but I remember Shakey's, Pioneer Pizza, and the first Johnny's. But if some people remember further back than that, then maybe we're not so old. I wish...............
mildawg, sorry, i just went back and noticed you were in mid-30's. LOL You must have been two years old when Shakey's was here. No, I'm much older, so I guess I really am ancient.
Me too, Cutie Pie!
Wong's first opened in the round building, and then moved across the street to the Pizza Inn/Pioneer Pizza building. The round building was then torn down to make way for the Taco Bell.
I miss Henry's and Alice's (Wong) "hot plate, hot plate!" And all the yelling back and forth about the orders - That was real atmosphere![]()
Wong's was great. I really miss that place. Johnny's too. Ate me plenty a "sweep the kitchen's".![]()
The day Wong's closed was a sad day for Ruston. I would eat there at least once a week for lunch for nearly 4 years. I have yet to find a Chinese place anywhere (even in Chinatown in NYC) that was as good as Wong's!
For my time at Tech, Wong's Griff's, and Johnny's were second to none. Unfortunatly, we didn't have time to hit Griff's while we were down for Christmas...I sure could go for a Monster and an order of fried mushrooms...
I *think* that the building across the street from the former Wongs/Taco Bell was called "Muthers" when I was at Tech. I don't seem to recall what went on there, though...
I remember Shakey's. It was there my freshman year. There was one in Monroe, also, located on Louisville. I miss Pisa Pizza, which was around the corner from Cushino's, and across from Keeney Hall. Great mufaletta sandwiches. Cushino's was also great, and was run by OmahaDawg's family. Pioneer Pizza, on California, was also popular during my college days.
