No No. You all may not understand what was said. DR did NOT talk to the graduates about giving back and loyalty to Tech. I would have been fine with that. What was said over and over ad nauseum was how many trips have been made begging money to Washington and how much money RA has procured and how many more trips will be made to his office. It was nothing to do with Alumni or school loyalty...y'all know I would have been more than fine with that. I gave the same speech to my son since he didn't get it at Commencement. What the graduates got was political gladhanding and ass kissing. I found it to be tasteless but I was so upset about my parents sitting in lawnchairs I was already unhappy. I was not the only one however who noticed this...
Personally, I think they should have to go back to their department to receive their diploma. It may be a little less convenient, but it gives a chance for the kids and the teachers to say a last farewell. Would require a little more up-front sorting but would definitely be an improvement over the chaos that reigns beneath the TAC.
I also think that they should go in the reverse order they typically go. PhD candidates should walk first. That really irked me when I got my DE that I had to wait till last after spending so much time obtaining it.
Maddawg did not make that comment. I did. All 800 or so graduates are lined up alphabetically to march. All graduates are seated alphabetically and are handed their diploma covers alphabetically. They manage to type the list alphabetically according to college and create a program and they manage to call out the names of those who are in attendance and skip those that are not.
However once graduation is over all 800 are turned loose and sent to two rooms to pick up their packages. There were 400 something kids in the throng attempting to get into once room to a row of tables that have signs taped to them that you can't see because the lines are so long - you may stand in the wrong line for 20 minutes before you realize it and need to get in another. If they can take the time to alphabetize and seat 800 young people - then surely they can organize the procedure to actually dispense the diploma packets.
You seem to take some issue with the fact I am taking issue with these proceedings. I didn't send my child to Tech for 4 years so he could say well at least I received my diploma on the day of graduation - some ceremony and dignity would have been the least that could have been provided on what is supposed to be a day of celebration and happiness. He could have had it mailed to him and avoided this entire mess if all he wanted was to get a piece of paper.
Only thing I remember about my graduation was flirting with some girl beside me...also being hungry.
I also have not mentioned the droves of people leaving in the middle of the ceremony - just as soon as they saw what they came to see, yelled and airhorned for their particular graduate - there was a mass exodus for the remaining time of the commencement exercise. Appalling rudeness.
Well since I found out folks act like this in a seminary graduation "ceremony" I see there is no hope. This type of "ceremony" has turned into a celebration. Next thing you know folks will be bringing air horns, hooping, and hollering at weddings and funerals.
Ok, when I make my will I will request airhorns at my funeral :P
I am working at UTA and living in Fort Worth. We'll be here for a while. The position I have is a great place to start out (in International Student Advising). We're open to going back overseas or into more of a ministry type work, but right now I'm really enjoying International Advising.
heh...same here...
I also spent the whole ceremony shooting daggers out of my eyes at my ex who was sitting across from me. *cough*whore*cough*slut*cough*
The air horns were there then too, and nothing was done about them then either...but the type of family that does this would do it even if their precious child was not allowed to pick up the diploma because of the horns...
I don't even remember who gave the commencement speech. I do know it was some guy who graduated back in the 70s and was now a multimillionaire and he was talking about how we could do anything with a Tech education. I also remember Dr. Dan not being there because this was a Fall graduation and he had something else he had to attend.![]()
This will no doubt be taken as bigotry by some, but it is simply my honest observation. At the Homer High School graduation each year, the principal makes a passionate plea for proper decorum during the ceremony. The ceremony then deteriorates into whooping and figurative behind-showing by many black people as their favorite graduate's name is called. It is disgusting, and makes you long for the old days, when proper respect was given.
