Here is the song stripped to the drums. Sound quality is poor, but you can see the cool polyrhythm that the song is built around.

    That didn't suck.

I listen to Coheed & Cambria more than anything else these days. The lead singer's voice takes getting used to, but the drums and guitar are awesome. They have an Emo progressive thing going.

Neverender is on their first album.

This song is from their second album.

Killswitch Engage is pretty awesome. In doses.

Avenged Sevenfold is the same way, IMO.

Note: I would suggest NOT YouTube-ing Avenged Sevenfold videos. They look like a bunch of douchebags.

it's not quite the same genre as the other bands you listed, but the high level of musicianship is there along with the mixing in of odd time...you may like it. let me know your opinion.
i had dogman and ear candy on tape. those were both pretty good albums. some of the lyrics are pretty lame, so i can agree with the beatles comparison. :icon_wink:
i did used to enjoy those guys. very good guitar and drum work. and the vocals don't suck.

i think the vocals are what make them stand out from everybody else...but the lyrics can be pretty weak. and there is a difference between weak lyrics (king's x) an lyrics that are just weird as hell (beatles)...just saying.

by the way if you search king's x on you tube, you will see some of the gayest videos ever made...turn your screen off and just listen to the music so that you don't get biased prematurely.

    From Coheed's 3rd Album.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vnSR1...eature=related
    Their most popular song.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tom0jyd099A
The album outro...some guitar virtuoso (behind the head playing and some mouth picking)

Another cool track, one of my favorites - alot of variation in this song.

I can listen to Avenged Sevenfold in large doses, but I heard they SUCK in concert.

    Staying with the trend -

Meriweather is pretty awesome, and local, but not emo.

The Ghost is, though. Probably my favorite song of theirs.

Claudio, the lead singer, plays some pretty complex riffs while singing. Maybe I am too easily impressed, but it is something I cannot do.

I would prefer to listen to Haake drum solos, but this is the closest think I have found.
I have a hard time with the screaming on that kind of thing, too. If I want unusual time signatures I'll just whip out the ole Brubeck.

So, I have listened to a few of their songs on Youtube now. The vocals are irritating to me, both lyrically and stylistically. Like Meshuggah, I am sure this is band I would have to listen to for a while before I can truly appreciate the instrumentation. I am sure that a higher fidelity version of the songs would make a difference too. Wouldn't it be great if all recordings came with the ability to turn on and off different tracks? I heard the new NIN album came with an interactive setup for Mac's which allow you to alter the song (deselect certain tracks, loop segments, etc.).
