    Re: Ruston Eating Places

IMHO, how can we talk about Ruston eating places without having a serious discussion about which establishment had the better pizza...Johnny's or Pioneer Pizza? If you're asking me, Johnny's had the best pizza, but Pioneer had the better atmosphere. When I first moved to Baton Rouge in the mid-1980's, Johnny's made an unsuccessful run at trying to establish a niche in the already-saturated market in BR, but it wasn't for lack of trying, and many of the natives thought it was really good. When I was at LTU, I preferred the Johnny's just off campus for hooking up with friends and acquaintances, and for those of you who had to take speech, creating one of Johnny's muffalettas was a favorite topic among those who couldn't think of anything else to speak on (circa late 1970's).

I'm going to be in Ruston in the fall, and I was wondering, besides Starbucks, where do you go for coffee and donuts/pastries? In my day, it was Pete's Donut Shop just off campus. Now, I understand it is an outlet for cellular devices. While I'm at it, what radio stations do you all listen to when you're in town? I must be having a senior moment, but I can't even remember where KLPI is (if that's even what it's called these days) on the radio dial. Living in Baton Rouge will do that to you.

The cellular store is gone now and a coffee house is now in the 'Pete's' building.

Instead of Starbucks, check out Crescent City Coffee on Trenton (Hwy 167) just south of the Interstate.

KLPI is 89.1. If you want sports talk, 97.7 especially 3 to 6 for Tech & other La. sports.

Oh my! Wongs! I love me some Wongs! I can taste those eggrolls now. I've had Chinese food all over the world (including Beijing and Shanghai) and nothing compares to Henry and Alice's cooking! :bigcry:

The Frothy Monkey is a great locally owned / operated coffee shop in downtown Ruston on Trenton Street. My favorite specialty coffee is the White Monkey Mocha - make sure to get plenty of the Monkey!!! Look for the monkey sign on the building. The owner is a Tech grad and his wife is a graduate student. They also serve breakfast and lunch.

Has anyone ever tried the Ruston Blend? They have/had a display in the front of the counter where they had bags of beans for sale with the handwritten inscription, "Ruston Blend" on them. During the holidays, I received a bag of it from my sister who lives in Shreveport, and my wife and I really enjoyed it.

Are there any independently-owned steakhouses in Ruston and surrounding areas? I'm sure the national chains have a location or two in Ruston, but I would like to try a good steak/baked potato combo made to order by some locals.

Actually, its the "Temple Baptist Church." But yea, it's on the service road on the south side of I-20, heading West, past the HUGE church.
