I think Randall Mackey will play D-1 football somewhere.
How bout them Dawgs!
After he plays at the JUCO for year or two he will be eligible.
How bout them Dawgs!
From what I have seen and heard I think you have seen the last of Randall Mackey's playing career. He might play one season at this juco but unless he gets a work ethic in the class room he is done. Tremendous player but just hasnt gotten the other aspects of STUDENT ATHLETE!
He should make for a decent AFL QB IF he stays out of trouble.
I think you may be over estimating the academic rigor of some JUCOs and other fine D-1 institutions.
Bastrop seems intent on cranking out decent football players who don't know the meaning of the word academic. Oh well, I guess winning is the only thing in some places.
And just think, it used to be completely opposite. I got a wonderful education there, but the football team sucked consistently. We moved to Mobile when I was a Junior, and I was pleasantly stunned at how much harder the schools in Bastrop were than in another state. I was an honor student at Bastrop HS, I had no problems at all in Mobile. They thought I was a genius girl down there! :icon_wink:
I guess when you lose for enough years you lose sight of what the real emphasis and importance truly is. Winning is not everything, but it seems to be to my fellow Bastropians now.![]()
I would imagine it has a lot to do with Bastrop's academic coach, Nelson Boggs going from Bastrop to Ouachita. He really helped a lot of those kids in the classroom prepare for the ACT with Sat. Morning classes.
Not sure if they are still doing that up there, I just seem to remember Bastrop's kids not having this kind of academic trouble 3-4 years ago.

Rueben Randall, it should be noted, is a most excellent student.
Love watching that guy play.
When I played JC ball in Mississippi a player could get a "certificate" in a vocational course (heating and refrigeration, sheet metal, auto mechanics, etc.), get their GED/ACT and then go on to a four year school. Don't know if the rules have changed in 27 years but that's the way it was back then.
It looks like we'll have one Bastrop player on our team this season, and he's a tough one:
Rocky Seay to walk on at TECH

He is related to Warren Seay, who came to TECH out of Delta High School in 1985. I'm not sure of the relationship.
