The good people at the Wiederkehr Winery in Arkansas make a fine muscadine wine, in white and blush and red. Quite tasty. I prefer the Niagara but the muscadine is delicious.

They sell Wiederkehr wines at the Devine Liquor Store in Ruston. I stocked up last week!

A mayhaw is not a grape, it is the fruit of the Mayhaw tree, [I]Crataegous opaca[I] a kind of hawthorne.

Thank you Skeeter. I stand corrected. They make good jelly too!

I used to love me some of that El Taco Grande on California near Pete's Donuts. Burrito Supreme with extra sour cream. They were one of the few places open back in the days when I got off work at 2 a.m. as a bouncer at Charlies.

    Re: Ruston Eating Places

Ooh, this thread brings back bad memories. Waking up at 7 on a Saturday morning to go to work, bad hangover, and then the acid belch to remind me of the 2:00 AM binge at El Taco Grungy. The heartburn and greasy stomach alone was enough to keep me from drinking for at least a week. Then, my stupidity (I can't claim ignorance, I knew better!) would take over again at 1:30 to 2 AM, and it was back to the grunge. The worst part was that the woman with all the tattoos that worked the late shift really liked my buddy, so she would give us all the unsold food. I tried my best to prove that it was really possible to overdose on grease and jalapenos.

I'm not sure whether it's changed or not, but I can tell you that I had that double cheesburger combo many eons ago when my digestive capabilities were a lot better than they are today!

I once had a girlfriend that lived for their mushrooms! Do they still serve them?

All right, this is for all our resident gourmands out there...whose got the best barbecue (and iced tea) in and around the Ruston area?

For me it is a tie between Hot Rods and Dowlings.

Dowlings - Get the SCATTERLOAD w/cheese on Jalapeno Cheese Bread (I would KILL for that bread!!!!!)
Hot Rod - I love their BBQ Chicken, and their salads and their Loaded Potatoes.

    Re: Ruston Eating Places

Back in the day, they weren't too many places around that served a good breakfast buffet in Ruston, and I see where Shoney's out of 67 has closed. It was either Pete's Donuts or McDonald's. What about today? BTW, I don't think Griff's served breakfast back then, but now...
