The expresion "it is what it is."

OF COURSE IT IS! IT IS WHAT IT IS BY DEFINITION!

How could anything be "what it isn't?" Stupid, redundant, banal phrase.

When you say this, you are expressing nothing.

    "The tree is a tree."

"A losing record is a losing record."

    "Our failure was a failure."

    Re: peeve of the day

People that don't get that you can turn right on red. People that tailgate me when I am in the slow lane. I am there on purpose, pass me to the left.

This was already mentioned but people that tailgate me when there is a car directly in front of me so I can't possibly go any faster. I HATE it when people tailgate me. I VERY, VERY often slam on the breaks. People that tailgate me end up white-knuckling it until they get around me because I will play games with them for miles and miles. On the flip side if I am in the fast lane and I see you coming up behind me I will be happy to move over. Just don't tailgate if there is someone in front of me as I also want to go faster.

Ah, but the problem is that people often believe that something is what it isn't. So the phrase, "It is what it is," is a useful way to ground oneself to accepting the reality of something without adding a whole bunch of meaning to it that is not warranted.

So, when one says, "A losing record is a losing record," what one is taking a step back from is a thought such as, "A losing record is an indication that I am, at the core (corps?) of my being, a loser." No, my worth as a person is based on much more than my record of wins and losses. Now, I may in fact be a loser, but my win/loss record, in and of itself, is not sufficient to assess my worth as a person.

i was going to reply in a similar fashion until i saw the post austin was referring to. normally, "it is what it is" is an easy way of saying either that "what it is" is all that it is, or that there is no denying the reality of the situation.

however, in the post he was referring to, the cajun fan was suggesting that "it is what i say it is." he was essentially using it to mean the exact opposite of what it normally means.

of course, all this argument about meaning shows that the phrase does in fact have a meaning beyond the obvious redundant tautology.

You could go into counseling for ulm fans whit that line of reasoning.

My peeve of the day is the pediatrician that cleaned my son's ears out with water/peroxide when she knew he had tubes in his ears since June. Oh yeah, she was the one that recommended them and sent us to the ENT. But she claims that we didn't tell her about what should be in his medical records. Argggh.

When one lane of the interstate is closed and people try to get in the closed lane and run to the front praying someone will let them in. Not on my watch buddy; then I tailgate!!!

But if you want to say that "it is a losing record, but my value as a person is unchanged by that losing record," then I would argue that you have a much more useful sentence available to you than "it is what it is."

    Don't you?

Okay, don't pull punches, tell us how you really feel about tailgaters.

Of course, you are okay with tailgaters at football games, right?

You need to lighten up buddy!:icon_wink:

Drove to S'Port yesterday for the first time since the I-Bowl. Good thing I decided to leave an hour early because I forgot about the traffic delay west of Minden. The right lane was closed yesterday so as always, I went ahead and got in the left lane waaaaaay early. I noticed these VIP line breakers kept speeding by in the right lane trying to get as close to the merge section as possible before moving back to the left lane which is the MAIN reason the traffic is backed up in the first place. Thankfully a couple of truck drivers moved over into the right lane and held tight in their positions to stop the line breaking. - Post from yours truly in Comments That Don't Warrant a Thread

I think that most people who use this phrase either a) don't totally have the insight to recognize what they are really expressing or b) for whatever reason (e.g., fear of a butt-whupping) don't want to talk about their "value as a person" in explicit terms. :icon_wink:

MLB batter helmets looking like they've been shot, burned, dragged through the mud, beaten with a crowbar, and worse.
