    One steal all game..

We allowed too many points to say we played conservative and didn’t try and jump/predict passes

A win is a win. I'll take it.

Our offense has been good through 2 games, but our defense has been nonexistent. No excuse to give up all those points to UTT and SEMO. Gotta play D if we want to compete against good teams.

Our defense currently ranks #334 in forcing turnovers and #342 in steal percentage. Major red flags. This team has to put a lot more effort into defense.

Any obvious difference in defense with Jean in the game?

Certainly no obvious difference. As a team, Tech didn't play any defense in either of our first two games.

As a team, our defensive efficiency of 120.1 would've been our 2nd worst all last season with only our final game against Marshall being worse. We are really lucky we won with that poor display of defense.

On defense against SEMO, Jean had 0 steals, 1 block, 1 defensive rebound, and 3 fouls. No clue how he fared in matchup defense.

Every SEMO player except Dalton and Simmons had ridiculous 120+ offensive ratings, but even Dalton had 7 assists to only 4 turnovers. And Missouri Baptist forced Simmons into more turnovers than we did. Heck, Missouri Baptist forced almost a twice as large turnover percentage against SEMO than we did.

However, Jean did have the highest offensive rating by either team in the SEMO game. He was incredibly efficient on offense.

Teams just play at different levels some nights. Hardly the first time we've gone to OT at home against a team we should have beaten by 10 or more in regulation.

The number on the far right is the number of personal fouls committed by each player.

    HARRIS, Jalen 26 8 5 2
    BRACEY, Daquan 20 5 4 2
    JEAN, Derric 14 1 3 3
    BOYKINS, Jacobi 9 7 0 4
    WASHINGTON, Jy'lan 7 3 2 1
    POWELL, Oliver 8 4 0 2
    WHITE, Joniah 6 5 2 1
    PEMBERTON, Jacolby 4 2 0 2
    CHRISTON, Exavian 2 1 0 0
    ARCHIBALD, Amorie 0 0 0 0
    DURUJI, Anthony 0 0 0 0
    TAYLOR, Jeremiah 0 0 0 0
    CURRY, Harrison 0 0 0 0
    MCKINLEY, Kyle 0 0 0

Yes, this is a somewhat crude way to evaluate a team's aggressiveness on defense. But it can tell you who's hustling. Since the SE MO game went to OT, the number of fouls committed tells me that only Boykins & Jean played any defense. It appears as though everyone else was trying to avoid contact.

You can brush off last year's Marshall game like that, but I don't think you can do that to the SEMO game, especially after giving up 71 points to a DIII team with no athletic scholarships.

As rudimentary as that is, it's probably close to the truth that we didn't get much D from anyone outside of Boykins and Jean and a few Joniah blocks.

It appears our 1 and 2 position starters are all offense and no defense, and we aren't getting much defense or rebounding (or scoring) out of our 4 and 5 positions.

Evansville actually played defense against SEMO. Evansville forced a turnover percentage 2.5 times greater than we did. Evansville gave up half as many second chance opportunities by cleaning up the boards. Evansville sent SEMO to the free throw line half as much. Evansville forced SEMO's effective FG percentage to about 6% less than we did. SEMO's 3-point shooting was essentially identical in both games, but we gave up 27 more 2-point shots than Evansville did (on only 6 more possessions)! We gave SEMO way too many easy baskets, didn't force turnovers, and didn't clean up the glass.

Their W and our W look the same in the standings. Enjoy the win and move on.

I agree our defense has been terrible the first two games. The good news is this isn't football. We have the same athletes on both sides of the floor. It is a matter of execution at this point.

I thought the defense in the first half of UT Tyler was very good - it was 40-17 with 7 minutes left in the first half

They got lazy in the second half due to the large lead and running through the roster

SEMO was an offensive game from the tip, some games are like that with never much separation

I think when everything shakes out if will be just like in past years - we hold the opponent to 70 pts or less and we will win about 80% of the time

I think the lack of defense is mainly a matter of effort, not execution.

Yeah, the UTT game makes sense.

But my concern is that laziness on defense from the 2nd half of the UTT game carried over to the SEMO game, and at no point in regulation did we crank up our defense even though it was toe-to-toe from start to finish. It wasn't until we got to overtime that we decided to bear down on defense. The way we came out in OT should've been how we came out of the locker room to start the 2nd half. (Jean blocks shot, Tech forces missed 3, Boykins def rebound, Boykins steal, Bam! Tech's up 7) Notice it was Boykins and Jean who sparked it with a little defense.
