I'm a Boomer and two things:

    1. I know what a lug-wrench is and how to use one
    2. I'm BOOMING!!!

If this is me "being poorly equipped to make it today" I'd love to see me properly equipped.

Uh oh. Maybe we offered that common core math too late. $500,000 in savings with no pension and maybe $24,000 a year in SS comes to about $50,000 a year for 20 years (assuming they live to age 85) in today's dollars.

When they realize this, they'll vote to take the money from the "other guy" who unfairly went to work and saved for his/her retirement, because that is only "fair".
I wonder how much more GenX paid for college than the boomers. I feel like they are one of the first generations where college was essentially what you did to get entry level employment (where it had been high school). Meanwhile, fields were becoming more specialized and education costs were going up at 3X inflation. They grew up with 80's opulence, but the path to achieve it got changed on them. The generations that come after them are a lot more fee conscious and skeptical of paying for services.

I agree college tuition is out of control. I have read it is because of skyrocketing administrative costs and not necessarily facilities or professor salaries, but I have not verified that. I do know that the same BS degree I paid about $3000 for in the late 70s and early 80s cost my daughter well over $30000 recently.

I think the degrees have become too specialized (like a trade school), which really doesn't help much with flexibility once you enter the workplace. Some degrees, like theater, exercise theory or African American Studies, may make you smarter, but I am sincerely doubting you will be capable of paying back $50,000 worth of student loans with the information you learned by attaining them.

I majored in accounting but wound up working in IT using systems, infrastructure and programming languages that did not even exist when I attended Tech (A PC was a relatively new concept at the time, and we used punch cards to feed programs into the card reader in the basement of Wyly Tower). Lots of folks in both accounting and IT started with degrees in others (from liberal arts to engineering). Stuff changes so fast these days that whatever specialized knowledge you got in college will be mostly useless in a few years after you graduate.

Man, I remember those decks of punch cards and that "high tech" card reader in the basement at Wyly Tower. By the time those of us that graduated in the early 80's got out of school, practically everything we'd learned about computers in school was completely obsolete (thank goodness).

    More good Trumpo news.

Even the libs and liberal media are praising Trump and his negotiating skills. Actually they have been for weeks for one brief moment after slamming him for the other 99% of the TV news and print.

There is the problem in the bolded quote. "Specialized knowledge". In college you should be learning concepts and gain knowledge that sees you through the change. The specialized knowledge should be picked up easily from the concepts you learn and updated as you grow in your profession. There are very few structures in newer programing languages that aren't similar to structures in older languages or don't accomplish the same thing with slight changes in syntax. A few new concepts have arisen such as object oriented programming but just make programming a little easier doing things you were already doing. When I went to TECH, the cards were handed over in the basement of Keeny Hall. I believe that the same can be said for other fields.

I am watching Life Below Zero and my PHD daughter just asked me where the Arctic Circle is! Too much social media, brainless TV, and emphasis on the wrong things. I honestly don't know how the next generation will survive when we are gone. They worry about their next smart phone, have very little useful knowledge, they don't know what is important to keep themselves safe and secure, and expect to be taught what they need to know to move on in life. Critical thinking is absent. They don't even have a clue what is going on in the world and how it is affecting them and their future. /Rant OFF

And this is exactly the way the socialist left want them; as they teach the average American student/"young educated minds" Politically Correct (PC), enabling skills bullsmit, the low value of life (abortion), anti-God and anti Christian values, along with the Russian and 3rd world thinking that America and capitalism is evil.

Their hidden message is "All Hail Stalin (commie) , Hitler (socialist marxist) , Satanic lack of morals, Global Warming Worship and total self worship!"
