No. 13 LA Tech Hosts Southern Miss for West Division Showdown

RUSTON, La. –*No. 13 Louisiana Tech returns to J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park for a Conference USA series against Southern Miss. This weekend's four-game series will be the second matchup between the Golden Eagles and Bulldogs in 2021. LA Tech (24-7, 10-2 C-USA) and USM (21-10, 8-3 C-USA) will face off this weekend for a matchup between the top two teams in Conference USA's West Division standings.

So do you think we use the Friday/Sunday pitchers tomorrow and the Saturday pitchers Sunday? Or keep the normal order?

This 2 day, 4 game doubleheader series is certainly going to be an enormous test for Tech, their run at topping the west and maintaining or better yet improving their national ranking. I guess this is how things go when you’re put to the test of improvement, becoming something better than you’ve ever been before. The Dawgs have a very good team. This weekend series will decide if they’re to be a great team and I really do mean great. I believe they have that potential. Go Dawgs, dominate USM, 4-0 for the weekend to make it 7-1 for the regular season.
I am curious about the two nine inning games today. Traditionally we have played nine inning double headers on Saturday, but that has been in three game series. I could not find a rule posted from C-USA so I'm curious if the coaches made the decision.
On another note, I finally heard about the ODU two game series at the end of the year. Thought it was strange, but had missed the explanation. For those of you, like me, who had not heard...
ODU was counting on coming to Ruston for the tournament anyway. Both ODU and Tech needed more games. These two games will not count as conference games, but will certainly help both teams RPI.
We originally had Rice scheduled there, but they picked up a game with Texas. I don’t know if that was our doing or theirs.
The rules are that if a doubleheader is played on Sunday, the games have to be 7 innings due to travel. Since 2 9s and 2 7s are supposed to be played in a series, that means today's doubleheader has to be 9 inning games.
First inning didn't take long for Fincher. Up and down.
Wells 1-out solo HR makes it 1-0 Tech after 1.
Up and down again for Southern Miss in the 2nd.
Very quick and quiet 2nd inning for Tech.
Fincher retires the side again in the 3rd. Game is flying along.
Young double but he is stranded at second in the Tech 3rd. Still 1-0 Tech.
Fincher finally allows a runner with Trimble getting an HBP with one out in the 4th.
Sargent 2-run HR puts Southern Miss up 2-1 after 3 1/2.
Nothing doing for Tech in the 4th, but Garcia did have a great 11-pitch at-bat. Need to work Stanley's pitch count up.
Neither team scores in the 5th, but Page got a 13-pitch at-bat before he hit a fly to center.
We needed these long at bats in the 1st and 2nd innings. Good to see guys battling though.
Two walks by Fincher and a single by Ewing makes it 3-1 Southern Miss after 5 1/2.
Marshall beats FIU 6-1 in game 1 at Huntington to get its first C-USA win.
Young single and Wells double makes it 3-2 Southern Miss with 1 out in the 6th, and that will be all for Stanley. Och in for the Golden Eagles.
Bates grounder speared by Och gets Wells hung up at third base for the second out. Head down running costs him again.
Garcia battles again and then doubles to left-center to drive in Bates to tie the game 3-3.
Netterville pitch-hits for Mutulia, and he is intentionally walked.
Called third strike on McConnell ends the inning.
