LaTech will score. The biggest factor on our defense, KState transfer Bryce English, got hurt before the season and hasn't played a snap. We've had to play our entire line our of position. Our linebackers are either young or slow. We put two defensive backs on the preseason all conference team, but they are left alone for long periods of time. This is supposed to be a pressure defense but our front seven isn't getting there. Any DB will look bad if the QB has time to eat a sandwich before the pressure gets to him.
Our offense is very good and balanced. When it is firing on all cylinders it put tremendous pressure on the other team to keep up and take risks. A good example is our first half vs UAB:
FG / TD / TD / Fum / TD / TD
Or the second half vs USM:
TD / FG / FG / TD / TD / TD / FG / Punt / End of Game
Now what is the offenses Achilles Heel? Our OL isn't good at handling pressure on the QB. If you have watched any NT highlights this year you will often notice our QB Mason Fine running for his life even on the plays we score on. In the 4th quarter last minute (literally) drive to win against UTSA Fine had to make three passes while being hit.
So what happened against FAU? We came out and immediately had two turnovers. Our D let FAU score early. At that point the coaches and team seemed to panic. We abandoned the run, tried to hit deep bombs all day. Became totally unbalanced, which is actually our strength on offense. Once FAU knew they could just load up and send pressure every play, the offense died. Every time we punted, FAU scored, just making us panic more.
If LaTech wants to win you need to 1) apply pressure to the QB, and 2) get an early lead and make the coaches abandon the run again. I'll be in Ruston tomorrow and expect this to be a close, hard fought game. Good luck to the Bulldogs (well maybe not tomorrow) and no matter what let's hope both teams get out with no injuries.
