Now you're right about Maggard. We'll eventually find out about Napier.
I'm still not sure why you assume Maggard was surprised by how much a decent coaching staff would cost and forced into doing something he didn't want to do. He's not new to this game.

Maggard made it clear from the beginning that he was going after the best coaching staff our budget would allow and everything he's done to date indicates that he intends to elevate our program. Heck, he signed a new Softball coach with a higher salary than our baseball coach is earning! Again, Cajun fans all assumed he'd go to the P5 level for an OC or DC for this hire. Brent Pry was known to be in the running from Day 1 and appears to have been in the mix until the final hour.

I knew Maggard was serious about this hire when he canned Hud on 3 December triggering a $1.5MM buyout instead of waiting until after 1 Jan and dropping that number by $500,000.........that's $500,000 that could have gone to the new hire if he was so concerned about money. He obviously wasn't. My point is, I believe Maggard likely knew exactly how much money he had to play with......and if he exceeded that number late in the game, then it's because he had donors ready to back him and he knew it.

As for what our AD's consultant was doing from about Nov 27 until late Thursday night, I would hope he was working the phones on our behalf earning his pay as this was the most important hire in our history. And speaking of that consultant, one powerful theme that emerged from their work for us is that when the next round of media rights expire in a couple of years, they believe a significant reshuffling in college sports is likely to occur. In their view, under-performing G5's will fall behind the rest of the pack and the goal is to position Cajun athletics to not be one of those left in the dust.

I don't recall saying anything about him being surprised. I think he had a very good idea of where this would end up.

Regarding your consultant: He is a very smart man. At the same time, I think he knows you have to hope for expansion in the 2022 to 2023 timeframe in an attempt to get you out of the Sun Belt. You are not going to get into the AAC. It's not going to happen. But you have to get out of the Belt. You don't want to be in the Sun Belt or MAC after 2023.

The one thing the Cajun program has done better than Tech, without question, is the fact you came up with a master plan before diving into making changes to facilities. Tech should have done the same thing 10 years ago.

That only means they will get a larger buyout when Kiffin leaves . He just needs another year or two to get the "stink" off of him. Some P5 will need a saviour to make their program relevant to their fans.

Then what's the rub? Are you saying he knew what it would cost but failed to tell the prez or something along those lines? Sorry, I'm not trying to be obtuse.

If he wanted a P5 OC or DC AND had a very good idea of what it would cost beforehand, then he obviously wasn't concerned about creating a situation where we offered a coaching pool of nearly $3.5 million. I can't figure any other outcome based on those assumptions.

FAU president Dr. John Kelly says 10-year deal with @Lane_Kiffin is further proof of FAU's "unbridled ambition."

The noble Brutus has told you that Caesar was ambitious. If it were so it was a grievous fault.

Dr. Kelly wants to build a Top 25 program. He also stated out of state applications to the school are up 35% and he says Kiffin has to be the sole reason, as they haven't done anything differently. First 10 win season in 14 years of FBS football. Kiffin probably won't stay the whole 10 years, but it could be interesting if he does.

Winning cures all! Too bad we only take conference games seriously, and couldn’t even win those this year!

Ten years is a long time. A lot can happen and a lot can change in 10 years. This doesn't look very smart for the school. But then again, I think we're talking about a bunch of people who have more money than sense.
