I never had any trouble with it... It has been quite some time since I've done this though.
Dealing with Microsoft in general is hard. I called in Friday to see if I could get my xbox repaired and after an hour they asked me to call back later.
Do it on there website. I have two xboxs and the one downstairs died. I put in the trouble ticket on xbox360 site, got my box in about three days sent it off and had the xbox back in about 5 days. We have a service center here in Dallas so turn around might be a little longer for different locations. All they do is make sure you had the ring of death and then send you one they already have fixed.
I have a cable modem and it just will not connect. So my buddy (who is good with computers) recommended a usb wire and we ran the internet through that and tried every thing..and every time the setup fails on IP.

It does seem like there was a setting that had to be changed...but once I got mine working it has been near perfect as far as the connection. That is as long as the Xbox live service was up and running. I can remember a few times when it went down back in the first part of the Halo 3 release days.
Got it to work. Just had to get a new modem. No biggie.
