Not enough is known. All that has been reported as far as any possible ties with terrorist is some imam or whatever, and that's really been it so far. Everything else is pure speculation until the facts come out (if they do- I have strong suspicion that not even half the story will be told).

Al Qaeda operates openly in Yemeni Abyan province
The failure of Lagos and Amsterdam airport security to detect the explosives the Nigerian Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab carried aboard two flights on Christmas Day was only a small side-effect of US intelligence policy-makers' flawed approach to al Qaeda. Security measures for US travel will be revised and enhanced, but until the agencies which fell down on the tasks of thwarting and combating terror are overhauled and change their approach, Americans will continue to be caught napping.
