The easiest way to improve WBB is for the NCAA to reduce the DI scholarship limit from 15 to 13 like the men. WBB already has a small talent pool, and there are too many good players just sitting on the bench at top programs leaving too many non-DI caliber players for DI programs. There are 702 more DI scholarship players in WBB than MBB, and that's 702 too many. Reducing the WBB scholarship limit by 2 would also significantly reduce the WBB transfer rate.

I tend to agree, but don't some of those transfers give some parity to the non-powers? I do agree that it is too many, though. Just thinking that programs rebuilding like ours can take advantage of some of the quick fix of a transfer right now.

On the PR front, I would think the reducing scholarships to women has a bad ring to it.

Which is why WBB will continue to slide.

Which means UConn and the other powers will continue to make a mockery of the sport.

Not really. Who's the best DI transfer we've landed in the last decade?

We haven't, but I think Middle Tennessee had one from the Big East. There are several programs that get the ones that ride the bench, but could be stars at other programs. Not saying you are wrong, though. I really agree with you. Just wondering how many good D1 players transfer from those top programs when they don't get play time.

I guess there are women to don't mind sitting the bench and riding the bench to a national championship versus playing someplace else.

On a different note, at one point, back in the day, football teams were allowed 100 scholarships and Darrell Royal would sign guys to a UT scholarship just to keep them from other Southwest conference schools. Now with 85 scholarships, its a different story.

One last note, they make a mockery of the game, I think, because the talent just is not very deep. In fact, elite talent may be very thin.

Right. That's my point. The WBB talent pool is so small compared to MBB, but WBB gets 702 more DI scholarships than MBB. That's how Mulkey is beating teams 119-30 in the NCAAW Tourney.

Only 7 of 351 DI programs have won national championships over the last 23 years. I don't think girls sign scholarships anticipating sitting on the bench for 4 years. The top 105 and bottom 702 are probably grateful, but I'm not so sure about the other 4,458 DI WBB players.

Just for discussion purposes, why won't the 4,458 be grateful. A reduction of scholarships may increase the number schools having a hope to make it to the final four, but not many. There may be 351 programs in DI WBB, but that is structure, not in the depth of talent.

The reason women have more basketball scholarships is Title IX, plain and simple. Men's football has 85. Not many women have football scholarships. Got to make up the difference somewhere. Bowling anyone?
