Beef up the funding. That would require the purchase of more instruments, the payment of more scholarships, and maybe even the purchase of more uniforms, as I am not sure how many they got with their last purchase.

What most of y'all are not getting is that COYHCSH wants this series - he can smell easy money (aka UMass etal) a mile away...

Every group he speaks to he says he would like to see the series restarted -

Whether it's a veiled shot at our AD's scheduling prowess, that's yet to be determined....

We have never been a BAND school. We have one and I was part of the program but for Tech the band program has always been a very secondary program. NSU and even ULM have great bands because they really have schools of music and people go to those schools for those degrees. People come to Tech for engineering, business or something else and do band on the side and then some decide to pursue it. At both of those schools there really aren’t many other specialized programs for people to choose (yeah I'm taking a swipe).
As someone else said NSU has been in school since the 10th whereas we only had 3 days. At the same time, our upper classmen should have a stronger sound than they did. Yeah, our band could take more funding BUT the program would have to go through a major change to become stronger.

That would be correct. I love the big sound.

BUT . . . . I love the cultures of bands like the Band of Pride and the MOB at Rice.

On the ULM thing, I worry that by US just talking about this possibility, NLULM will suddenly once again find a will to live and decide it is worth extending the life of their program just for a chance to play us.

When the band was really founded in about 1961 their were only about 36 members. The AF ROTC band was bigger. At that time Tech hired Jimmy Reynolds. They discontinued the AF ROTC band and by my freshman year there were about 200 members. The original 1961 members had pins that said "fighting 36". My roommate was in the band in 1965. There were very few scholarship. Band counted as a PE credit and they practiced everyday at noon during football season. It took quite a bit of dedication. Maybe it still does.

I can't believe the other schools have enough music majors to make up the whole band, but maybe so.

You seem to have issues with money. It's a horn, not an automobile. NSU managed to do it. Are you saying we can't do what NSU did?

You can't spend your entire life using money as an excuse for failure.

Woodwinds do. Brass typically don't. Percussion obviously don't.

40% of the NSU's 305 member band are music majors.

20% of LSU's 325 member band are majors. They also each receive a $1,000 service award on top of their scholarship.

Some instruments cost more than some cars.

Can you expand on that? We're talking specifically about marching band instruments of course. In other words, for sake of this discussion, we're excluding any vintage instruments used on the Beatles' Sargent Peppers album, or instruments that Pink Floyd might experiment with. Just saying....
