NCAA starts process to allow athletes to profit off likeness

And so it begins ... nice to squeeze this into a sports news cycle where the NFL could very well have several big trades go down in the next few hours.

    Named jerseys?
    Calendars?

Where do you see this ending up?

Do you think schools are going to let their athletes use their logos, etc for the athletes' profits?

That kid that just signed with LSU needs to call up some HVAC companies or Fridgidaire. Hopefully we get some funny lineman bits shilling for buffets.

Mostly it will probably be Heisman candidates signing jerseys.

Best case is the video game comes back. Heck, I'd have to consider upgrading from my current cutting edge gaming system set-up of SNES and PS2.

There'll be some shady stuff, but probably not more than is already out there.

Exactly. Most of the transactions made under the table to get recruits now will be made where everyone can see them.

Instead of "Booster X" that owns a car dealership paying the next 5-star QB a bunch of money through a liaison, he'll just have the kid do a few commercials so it's legal.

So what happens if the car dealer says he'll pay a certain player 100K to do TV commercials, if and only if, he will play for TX A&M?? And the same car dealer says he will only pay the same kid 30K to do the commercials if he goes to LSU? And he says he won't pay him at all if he chooses to go to LA Tech??

I don't think the NCAA realizes the can of worms they are opening, and I KNOW most college football fans don't fully understand it. We're about to have a lot of agents and business people preying on these college kids.

They are concerned with what you ard talking about.

Specifically, the board said modernization should occur within the following principles and guidelines:

Assure student-athletes are treated similarly to non-athlete students unless a compelling reason exists to differentiate.
Maintain the priorities of education and the collegiate experience to provide opportunities for student-athlete success.
Ensure rules are transparent, focused and enforceable and facilitate fair and balanced competition.
Make clear the distinction between collegiate and professional opportunities.
Make clear that compensation for athletics performance or participation is impermissible.
Reaffirm that student-athletes are students first and not employees of the university.
Enhance principles of diversity, inclusion and gender equity.
Protect the recruiting environment and prohibit inducements to select, remain at, or transfer to a specific institution.

That is the point I have tried to make several times, but most seem to see this as a way to cut out under the table and backroom deals, they do not see the unintended consequences of this move. Those deals are not what I am worried about, Advertisers will begin having a say in where athletes go. Metropolitan areas will be a bigger draw to many because there are so many potential advertisers that even lineman may get opportunities to cash in. We are not considering the small business' that may look at the popular but not so famous linebacker to do a used car commercial for them for a few hundred bucks. This is not just about the Heisman trophy candidates who will command thousands for a commercial, it will eventually run deeper than that and only schools in strong metro areas will have this advantage. This is not a good thing, if this happens, it will be the unraveling of the NCAA, or at least the creation of a new division of football. This will surely separate out the top twenty or thirty teams, the schools with the biggest opportunities will reap the benefits in the recruiting game.

We already have California legalizing it and Florida working on it, believe me, every state with a power 5 team has some people lobbying for it already. They will not wait for another state to get a leg up on them in recruiting.

I'm not sure how these concerns take us somewhere different than the status quo.

But what if another player becomes better than the endorser and the endorser deserves to sit the bench?

You don't think car dealers are offering football players money to go to certain schools now?
