It seems like it SHOULD be deflationary, still a quantity and price for goods and services would be dictated by supply and demand, assuming a capitalist economy, and everyone would need some way to pay. How much extra art and entertainment are people going to be interested in paying for, in addition to the other deflated goods and services they are buying?

No telling. I think people would find a way to fill that void. It might even become more of a barter economy.

Businesses will still own the means of production, whether it is traditional capital of AI. They just might not need many employees. So where are people going to get their barter from?

It's the old original racist and segregationist Democrat's desire to keeping the black man and his family down but yet still on the government "who's your daddy" tit and still voting for those liberal arse racist. Even Obama understood and used this factoid and tactic.

I vote for getting rid of all attorneys and lawyers before ditching the true working man and woman that actually create value in society.

They'll grow gardens, they'll raise chickens, pigs, and cattle, and they'll use whatever skills they may have to make things others want. Industrious people will find a way to get what they need. Lazy people will starve.

The stuff they make will be far more expensive and inferior to the stuff automated businesses make. They might survive, but their ability to generate wealth for themselves would be significantly diminished.

This trend has already started playing out to a minor extent across the country and has led to the type of economic dissatisfaction that we saw in the 2016 election. Automation and job disruption will only get more severe. Capitalism is brutal that way.

Exactly!! There was a quote something to the effect of " Tough times make strong people, Easy prosperous times make lazy and weak people". Our country has had prosperous times for over half a century. Many people today do not know how to be self sufficient if needed. I'm very fortunate that I have our family homestead in Louisiana which is about 50 acres and we can raise cattle, chickens, hunt, fish etc. If Kroger runs out of food, all I need to do is get back to Louisiana.

Lol. Regression of standard of living will not be easy or fun even for those that can make it. Those that own the means of production will still do quite well, assuming capitalism persists.

Nobody ever said it was going to be fun. In fact, it's going to be brutal on most people. A financial reset will likely turn a lot of wealthy people into poor people, and a lot of chronically ill people will die.

Hardly a reset. Those that own the AI means of production will have all the material wealth they want and those that rely solely on hard work/labor will have nothing of value to offer.

So how do lawyers factor into your new world order?

They will right up to the point where the masses start beheading all those that own the AI means of production. History is rife with examples of general populations rising up in rebellion against those who control everything. The French revolution was a good example of the kind of reset I'm talking about.

We're seeing the start of it here in the US with the exposure of all the corruption of the DC establishment starting to come out. President Trump has brought forth a tremendous movement in this nation that is in the process of destroying those that would control everything, and no amount of AI will be able to put this genie back in the bottle.

You mean when the socialists rebel?

If so I agree. That is what we are already seeing with Trump’s election. Those who have suffered in this new wave of automation based technological disruption falsely believe that their ills are caused by regulation of business, globalization and illegal immigration. Trump’s anti-globalism rhetoric is stage 1 of anti-capitalism.

The new means of production are increasingly moving to the West coast. The new smart software that reduces the need for high skill workers in “back office” jobs (HR, finance, accounting, managerial, etc) across the US including so-called “flyover country” is being produced in places like San Francisco, Silicon Valley, Seattle. Digital transformation is creating more valuable jobs in IT (currently) but is also quickly disrupting the need for other more familiar middle class jobs. But that is how capitalism works. If you are a capitalist, you should welcome this type of change because this is how productivity (GDP) grows.

Obviously we have already seen a significant growth in automation in farming and manufacturing. The classic story of needing fewer machinist jobs because with CNC machining, one “machinist” can with the assistance of software and robots do the job of more than 10 at lower cost and more profit is playing out gradually in every industry and with all jobs. Great news for the capitalist that owns the means of production, but not so great for the “hard worker” that relies solely on his labor.
