    2017 Schedule

    2017 Non-Conference Football Opponents
Date Opponent (Current Massey Composite Ranking) Location
Sept. 2 #227 (Sagarin) Northwestern State Ruston, La.
Sept. 9 #57 Mississippi State Ruston, La.
    Sept 16 @ Western Kentucky
Sept. 23 at #69 South Carolina Columbia, SC
Sept. 30 #96 South Alabama Ruston, La.
    at UTEP
    UAB
    FAU
    UNT
    at Rice
    at UTSA
    USM

Next year has a chance to be special. We'll have 7 home games for the first time that I can remember.

We will not have #33 WKU & #79 MTSU on our schedule!

I think our hardest 2 games will be USM (home) and at UTSA. UNT did beat us at home in 2013, but that was 2013. Marshall will hopefully still be down and Charlotte I'm not sure about.

We seem to play well at Rice & UTEP. UAB will be probably look like a first year team and FAU will be under a new coach.

South Alabama was a bowl team but they are #FunBelt and we take care of #FunBelt teams.

State was 5-7 this (with St Pete bowl left to play), but we've got them at home. I'm glad we have NSU the week before to get a game under our belt (but NSU is another story!).

It's always hard to win on the road in the SEC, so South Carolina will be tough. They only be UMass by 6 at home this year, so I don't know what to expect next year.

I'm excited about the weapons we have coming back on offense. I hope Carlos stays another year, but that picture with Fitch makes me think he's not.

Coach seems to think the underclassmen will outperform what we are losing, so hopefully the defense will be better!

    I a think 9-3 would be a good year. but I'm hopeful for 11-1 (or 10-2).

    Re: 2017 Schedule

By far the best home schedule we've had in years....maybe ever? Here's what we will have at home:

    NSU
    Mississippi State
    South Alabama
    North Texas
    UAB
    Florida Atlantic
    Southern Miss

We should have some nice crowds in 2017.

    Re: 2017 Schedule

First time ever for 7 regular season home games. We played 15 games in 1984, but four were playoff games and the last three on the road. I think we've only played 6 regular season home games a few times (3 or 4 maybe?)

2017 is a great chance for us to take things to the next level.

    Re: 2017 Schedule

The schedule sets up to get that 10-win season. Still gotta do it on the field.

Will be yet another year w/o a returning starting QB. I think this goes back to 2009, actually. Yeah, Colby Cameron became the starter mid-year 2011 and came back as the starter for 2012. But, Isham was the named starter for '11. So, technically... here we go again. Will it be J. Smith? Likely, but not for certain. Wouldn't mind a great QB, who starts as a freshman or sophomore and gives us 3+ solid seasons as "the starter." That would be different.

The QB keys to the LA Tech 'Ferrari" belong to J'mar Smith now. He is very mobile, his improvement from last spring to the fall was impressive, our young WRs love him, and he will have another spring under his belt in a few months. It is his job to keep or lose at this point IMHO.

I hope we can field a more competitive defense or next season will be a roller coaster ride at times.

Said in another thread thread that this year may not have been the rebuild. Next season may be. It will be masked by a weaker schedule in which we could still win 8-9 games.

Oh gee, did we graduate 47 seniors again?

not sure d80, shouldn't T1 or someone else be the authority on that? We may have the same thing happen next year as this season. Several thought losing Driskel, Dixon, and others would result in a 7 win season at best. I see similar holes popping up this year even if we don't have 7 guys drafted. Hope we just have next man up and don't miss a beat.

    Re: 2017 Schedule

I think next year depends largely on the linebacking corp. The last two years, we've seen the glaring hole. Tech needs LB's with speed and with the skill to blitz effectively. They need the speed to cover backs, drop back in coverage and get to the sidelines on running plays.

There's a reason Tech has put DB's and DLinemen in the NFL, the last two years, but no LB's.

101% agreement on the need for LBs.

It's been a huge hole that has kept us from taking that next step up as a program. Has to be a point of emphasis in recruiting and player development.
