Benton's Owen commits to Tech - Shreveport Times

Benton High School point guard Laura Owen stepped out of the "Eclipse" movie long enough on Wednesday to say she has verbally committed to play for the Lady Techsters and coach Teresa Weatherspoon.

The 5-foot-10 Owen, who carries a 3.7 grade point average and who has scored a 22 on the ACT, averaged 8.5 points and five assists as a junior for a Lady Tigers club that finished 20-13 and lost in the first round of the Class 4A state playoffs.

Sounds like good news! Plus she comes from a TECH family. Who else was recruiting her?

We, also, picked up a PG from Las Vegas. Can't get to her name right now, though. Supposed to be a tough defensive PG (take no prisoners - TSpoon type player).

Not sure...... I know there were some. Most left her alone knowing that she always wanted to be a Lady Techster.

Another of my fellow Benton people I know from this board, man don't I feel special.

. When I saw her play she always knew what to do with the ball, especially in passing and has great vision, but sometimes tried a little to much which led to turnovers. But that was her sophmore year, so im sure she has gotten better. She would have more points but her teamate is Lu Lu Perry who is probably the best player in the state. It would be awesome to have those two in the backcourt together.

We will be needing guards - good shooting guards. We have a PG with Owen, but need some outside shooters. We have Anderson and Bramble-Donaldson (who may be more of a forward) for 4 years. I am sure we will sign a big, as well, but that will come. Tough minded point guards are going to be a hallmark of our team - if they are good, they can get the ball to the right place at the right time. Yes, we need bigs, but great guards are needed too.

We have 14 players on the roster, 10 are guards.

We have some decent height on many of those guards. If you really think about last year, we needed guards that could hit from the outside consistently. We had a good inside presence. Without Dowdell, though, Anderson will have to step it up.

We had landed a VERY highly touted and recruited post player that didn't pan out because of a string of unfortunate decisions on the recruit's part with the law. I think you will be surprised at what we will do this year with the depth and talent we have.

All of us know that we need a great post player. I think Bramble-Donaldson will surprise you with how much bigger she plays than her height. She looks like a tough to defend post player, even though she is more of a forward. I think we are going to be very salty this year - no, not top 10 yet, but we are building. We are not going to have everything we need all at one time while re-building this program. Each year, it will get better, though.
