Shipley's in A-town, maybe. Shipley's in Houston (where the donuts are cold 75% of the time), true.
Re: Best thing I ever ate?
I have never had a better donut than a piping hot Southern-Maid donut. Delish.

Is that a chain? If so, which shop do you go to?
The best ones are the mom and pop shops. Tasty's in Ruston is up there (comes in 2nd to the Spudnut in my opinion).
Is Tasty's still around?

Southern-maid is all over the SBC. Don't know about anywhere else.
Re: Best thing I ever ate?
I think Tasty's might have closed recently.

No I haven't, but I will check it out the next time I am over that way. Thanks for the tip!
Re: Best thing I ever ate?
I have to give the nod to Southern Maid when it comes to dounuts.
On the way to both Alabama games in the 90s, I ate at Dreamland, and their BBQ is awesome. Dowling's ranks high though.
I lived in Ft. Worth for about 6 months and Joe T's was very good, but I thought La Familia gave them a strong run for their money. Best Mexican was probably Chuy's in Dallas.
Best shrimp and grits was at Schooner's in Panama City Beach. Cool place to have a beer too.
Speaking of beer, if you're ever in Sacramento, CA, try the Rosebud Strong Ale at The Rubicon Brewing Company downtown. (My cousin owns the joint, but the beer really is good)
Best steak was probably at Carnevino in Las Vegas. Second is probably Dickie Brennan's Steakhouse in New Orleans. The Cub in Shreveport also ranks high and The Cub has the best Au Gratin potatoes.
Best salmon was at the Glacier Brewhouse in Anchorage, AK. They only used wild Alaskan salmon, and their really is a difference.
Best pizza was at The Moose's Tooth, also in Anchorage.
Best fried chicken was at my grandmother's house. Never had anything that good at Popeye's or KFC.

We've got a Chuy's in Fort Worth now. I have eaten at that one and the one in Dallas and while they're not bad - I've not really been overwhelmed.
I ate at Joe T's several years ago and liked it, but it didn't change my world or anything.
A lot of my friends swear by Uncle Julio's but they haven't impressed me at all.
My favorite Fort Worth Mexican place is La Playa Maya.

Chuy's has great sauces and great drinks. The food is good, but not great.

No but I will be in Houston this summer around the 4th of July. I may see if we can give it a try. Any of you Houston guys know how close Luther's is to Kema or if there is a public fireworks show that I can take my family to for the 4th?

I've been to all of the Chuy's in Dallas, Ft. Worth and Arlington. They're ok, but the ones in Austin have a leg up on them. The best one in Austin is on Hwy 183 in Northwest Austin. Chuychanga with deluxe tomatillo sauce rocks! Used to eat there at least twice a week and would gorge on the creamy jalapeno sauce.

I feel like I'm watching the Food Network. Some of this stuff looks awful good. :D
