I think most of our db's would try that and then get there doors blown off as the receiver out ran them to the end zone. It's kinda like pick your poison with our D. Play press coverage and give up the big play or sit back in a zone and let them slowly dink and dunk you to death.

Basically -
The offense is average - top 50%
The defense is poor - bottom 25%

thanks for bringing it all home there DfM. yea mediocrity. I hate it.
First off I'm not EVER going to compliment any defense for giving up 30 points. That mindset shows just how crappy we have actually become. 2nd There are many reasons for us giving up "only 30". Our defense actually played like crap.
Hawaii shut their offense down in order to milk the clock for most of the 4th quarter. Hawaii missed out on 2 chances to score because their defense and ST kept scoring and giving the ball back to us NOT because we were stopping them. We allowed a 400 yard passer and a 200 yards WR. We had no push up the middle on our pass rush. All Moniz had to do is simply take one step up in the pocket and he had plenty of time. We never adjusted to this. Our blitz packages suck and are ineffective. We pretty much allowed a 100 yard rusher who averaged over 6 yards a pop. On most of the big gains Hawaii had it wasn't just one guy if you scan the field multiple WR's open.
I am very confident that if Hawaii hadn't shut it down in the 4th and also if their offense had gotten the ball the two times their D/ST's scored their offense could have and would have put up 14-21 more points.
That's where the rubber meets the road.
And those numbers are with a 17 year old QB. When he matures and the TO's go away we are going to put up huge numbers. Somebody defending our defense please show me why we should be optomistic on that side of the ball.
Again I love our board and fanbase but this is our collective mindset. Like I said in the other thread when Dooley first came to Ruston what did he say? Basically he said: "We have had one of the worst defenses in the nation the last few years and everyone keeps asking me what we are going to do to fix the offense?" At Tech if we lose a game 40-34 we wanna analyze why we didn't score 41 instead of trying to figure out why we gave up 40.
Offense sells tickets, Defense wins games.

Not bad for a true freshman....
Yes he still makes mistakes, but I would rather take my lumps with him this year and be off and running the next three years -

More plays should also equal more opportunities to create turnovers and/or consistently force consecutive three and outs. If we're ok with giving up yards, then we need to start ball-hawking. If not, then we need to start learning to shut down offenses. Just saying "we have more yards because there are more plays" is not adequate justification for our performance.
Were did Crowton's defense rank back in the good ole days?
Were did Middle's, Zona's, Texas Tech's, ect. defenses rank?
Y'all can look at these stats and judge the defense, but you all know the defense did its job against USM and Miss. State. So if I admit the defense could have played better for 1 quarter against Houston and 2 quarters against Hawaii will y'all admit that this Franklin System nonsense and our HC isn't working?
No...

We're 1-4, so I guess it depends on what the point of the "system" is.
Seriously though, you could see the differences between our O and Hawaii's. That was a team running a specific system and running it like a well-oiled machine. They looked light years ahead of us. I don't think there is anything wrong with the system as it is, but these coaches are having a REAL hard time getting our players to properly execute the system...it's not like we don't have talent. On the offensive side of the ball, this team has the most talent we've had in a very long time.
Recruiting is important and I think Dykes is very good at it. Offensive scheming is very important and I think Dykes/Franklin are very good at it. Motivation and in game coaching are also very important...that's where I'm not sure Dykes and Franklin cut the mustard. Schemes are great, but you've gotta know when to change the plans in reaction to the other team. We're not good at that. Nick is a freshmen, but all the INTs are starting to hurt us.
I don't know where I'm going with this. I don't know if it's a problem with the system, a problem with the players, or a problem with the coaching, but we're 1-4 and we have no killer instinct.
There is A problem...any way you slice it.
