''Don't be a bad dagh..."
This is also the same defensive scheme that couldn't close out games last year. The D played a very good game against Miss. St, but that same D leaving receivers wide open during the Hawaii game and allowing UCA to take us to overtime in a high scoring game doesn't exactly help the argument that the offensive system is not working.
Plus, if you're wanting to use stats as justification for one system versus the other, look at Isham's stats (19th overall passer, 49th in overall offense). Also note that the USM game, he was not getting any help from his receivers when they were dropping very catchable passes. With the notable exception of Patton, our receiving corps hasn't been performing well enough for anyone to say that it's entirely on the system. Even with all of that, we are ranked 65th in the nation on offense and 100th in defense. If the D improves by stopping other teams and can get the ball to Isham, then we'd be in much better shape. But until we get some swagger on that side of the ball, I worry that we'll be seeing more of the same.
Fundamentals:
1) tackle with your head up, eyes on ball carrier
2) DBs turn and find the ball when still in flight
3) DLs if you can't get the sack, put your hands up
4) do not over-pursue, backside containment
5) CBs jump the route when you have safety help
I agree with a whole lot of what you are saying here including the strengths and weaknesses of our coaching staff.
Where I disagree is the comment on the talent level. I think we are really lacking in WR talent. Outside of Patton who is the real deal I think there is not much there. Or at least not much that we have seen. Posters, myself included, can clamor for other players to get PT but that is still speculation. The dropoff between our #1 WR and our #2 and #3 WR's is way too big. It's a chasm. When Crowton was here for instance we had Troy but Cangelosi, Daigre, and Jordan were very good WR's. I really feel like we have a weak overall offensive line. I think we have an incredibly un-athletic offensive line. While our QB does indeed have talent, the lack of experience often renders his talent level moot. Time is the only cure for this.
You mean our coach asked our QB to pass the ball? Again I am totally not sold on your theory that he only had one choice of where to go with the ball. I don't buy it for a second. It would almost be unheard of. There was an open WR being covered by RB that if thrown to would have had a big gain, almost certain 1st down, possible TD, Creer was also available for the dump off. Our QB CHOSE to throw the ball into the endzone and it was picked off. And even at that, it was a poor throw. It was poor execution. If no one was open and the QB had no options I think the playcalling would come into question. But their were definitely options. Our QB chose the wrong one and then compounded the error buy NOT throwing it where would only be caught by our WR OR go out of bounds. This QB is talented. He can make that throw. He just messed up.
