Malzahn is beloved by high school coaches in Arkansas. It will be very difficult for us to sneak into Arkansas and get a kid passed over by the razorbacks now. I hope we hold onto Dixon. Getting a commit from Clark, the Ark OL that we have been recruiting, and/or Knighten is now very unlikely IMO.
It will be hard, but I believe the recruiting will be about the same with it only slightly harder for us. worse case scenario is that recruiting in AR shuts dwn, but I believe this will open us to other states, plus Louisiana is a better recruiting area in my opinion.
Malzahn knows that w/o a Cam Newton his offense, just like ours, doesn't work consistently against higher levels of competition. I imagine that Malzahn's salary, like Franklin's, is strongly supplemented by selling his offensive system. Malzahn knows that his system looks best against the weakest opposition.
With that perspective, a move to Ark. St. makes perfect sense.
The video has been removed. Lol.
Here are some quotes: http://www.imagecpr.com/?p=10129
- On working with Auburn players. “It goes to a place of questioning his integrity and his character and his intelligence because a group of 18 to 22 year olds did not perform on the field like they should have. And if you’ve worked with 18 to 22 year old individuals, most of the time they’re not the most intelligent people that are out there anyway. We’re the nuts because we’re willing to base our whole entire lives on what they decide to do for the day.”
- On Auburn RB Michael Dyer: “He has a little bit of an attitude. He carries himself with a little confidence that we have to kick around every now and then. But he’s a great kid.”
- On former Auburn QB Cam Newton: “He is cute. Pretty boy. I love him, but don’t tell Gus.”
- On meeting with Lou Holtz: “We got to go to Lou’s house. Gus was way impressed. I kept saying, ‘He has a lisp or something. There’s something going on with his mouth. I can’t really understand what he’s saying. And Gus, was like, ‘Shut up!’”

In the past couple of years this would have been crazy to hear his name associated with the Ark State job - things change and those things are changing fast at Auburn. Gus is a Arkansas native and he is walking into a good situation in Jonesboro. He is also a Henderson State grad and was there at the same time my wife was and she still doesn't remember a thing about him!
If he's there 2-3 years and they schedule the right way, they will be top 25. That's a big IF though. I'm not saying they'll ever be higher than the 20's but I think it's realistic. He will be able to get the players to run his offense against a weak SBC schedule and rack up tons of points.
I can see it from any other conference, but the sun-belt says nothing about how good your team is unless your playing ranked times for every game out of conference. That's the only way I see it, but assuming he stays 3 or more years they shouldn't be in the Sun-Belt too much longer.
