This sort of goes to the question of "what are high school athletics for?" The flipside of what you refer to are all the kids that want to play, can't, but would be able in a district split more ways. Clear Lake High, when I attended, was approaching strong. I liked attending a big school, but it would probably be a different story if I wanted to participate in athletics but couldn't (I got that out of my system at the junior high level).

They do. The Allen HS football coaches though do a good job at giving meaningful playing time to most of the team. The coaches do not believe in running up the score on our opponents subbing for the starters sometimes as early as the second series in the 2nd quarter. Because of that when a senior is lost to injury, an underclassman with game-playing experience is ready to step in so we rarely miss a beat.

    TD,

I have no problem with the way Allen does it. Personally I think the best ground is somewhere in between the way Allen and Frisco operate on the athletics side of it (may be a little too hard to get playing time in some sports in Allen, and I think we thin out our talent pool a little too much in Frisco sometimes).

As a teacher, I think Frisco, McKinney, and Allen have been very responsible with their spending when it comes to academics vs. athletics. I know Frisco goes schools and resources first then spends on athletics. I assumed the surrounding towns do too, otherwise the citizens wouldn't be passing the bonds etc so readily.

It has been a plus in Frisco since it started to grow that it has a large commercial tax base to offset the property tax rates. Allen has grown so much commercially in the last 10 or so years that I bet that has eased the property tax strain a bit.

except maybe in some very rural small counties in Texas a one HS/county isn't close to possible. Collin County has roughly 800,000 people in it. Drive in the plano/allen/mckinney/frisco part of Collin and it's basically one big school zone a cool 20 mph every morning and afternoon. lol

I was referring, as much as anything, to being able to make the team in the first place. This is less a big deal with football (though even there, it matters) than it is with other sports (specifically, basketball and baseball).

To some degree your right but not all together true. In each one of the 5A Districts, the top four teams in each district qualify for the playoffs. The two schools from that district with the largest enrollment are bracketed in 5A Division I for the state playoffs and the smaller enrollment schools are placed in Division II. You can be the district champ and be ranked #1 in the state but because of enrollment be placed in Division II for the playoffs. 4A does the same as well but only takes that top three with the larger school going to division I and the smaller two playing in division II.

Yes, the one large school philosophy does mean some kids never have a realistic chance to make a team particularly for sports like you mention. That unfortunately, and I agree, is the negative side of it.

I know, what I was saying and wasn't clear enough (my bad), is the split from each district is based on enrollment, not talent. Also they take 4 teams in 4A. That changed 2-3 years ago while I was still coaching.

3A is where the playoffs are reduced to three teams per district.

Also the divisions only exist for football. In all other major team sports your class is just your class. There are a couple of exceptions like with soccer, there are 3a schools with teams but they must play in the 4a playoffs and may times are in a district with the closest teams (usually 4a).

I don't hate any high school or college sport, some pro sports are a different story.

If only North Texas would have waited they could have borrowed this stadium and could partially, at least, fill it.

Re: Allen Texas building $60 million high school football stadium

This community of Allen is pretty darn awesome. What they've done in those 10 years is something that is to be admired. My daughter lived there for a year across the street and we saw the groundbreaking. Was very impressed in the way the city had developed a great process for those coming into the city to live. Also taking the Exchange Parkway off of 75 north you'll see not only the Stadium, but a three story golf driving range, a huge brewery with beautiful landscaping and I believe the next exit up is where they have a great shoping center with a dog park and plenty of trees. it's really a great place to live...don't forget the Allen Americans hockey team (CHL) plays in the Allen Event Center that seats 6,000 plus and is "brand new" and they are currently in the playoffs...it's a good place to live at 80,000 +, but I'm still in Shreveport hoping for the best !:bigcry:

That is not simply a driving range. That is Top Golf. It's a fully automated driving range with a resteraunt and bar. Think throwing darts with golf balls. Here is the link. http://topgolf.com/allen/
