Sorry, just noticed this question -- it was on sale at "Larry's" a pretty cool local gun shop if you're ever through North Alabama. The LCP is OK for what it is, a very compact, very concealable weapon. The trigger pull is realllly long, though (I'm still getting used to it), and the sights are useless/non-existant. It's not particularly fun to shoot, obviously, since it weighs so little. Without the laser it's tough for me to hit the broad side of a barn past 10 yards. The Crimson Trace is costly, but much better than the alternatives (a friend of mine bought the LCP with a lasermax laser on it -- not nearly as good). At least on the LCP, the Crimson Trace is natural to activate and use, and takes up very little extra real estate. I'd buy it again -- I'm less certain about whether I'd buy the LCP again.



The Kel Tec PF9 is worth what it costs. Not much more. Since the break in period it's been pretty reliable, but I find I carry it rarely because it's just a tad too large for pocket carry, and if I want to carry something larger than my LCP (or your K3AT that you mentioned) I go to my H&K USP or Glock.

So, would you say the LCP (or in my case, the LC9) would be worth $100 more than the PF9?

My local shop has a fair price on the LC9, but doesn't seem to have the PF9 (though they have couple other Kel-Tecs). They also have the Beretta and Taurus models in that size range. They also showed me a Bersa that was a little bigger, but still small enough for my wife to handle.

I don't really want to spend a ton on this, but I also don't want to get something that's note going to last or is going to need a ton modding to keep it working.

Additional thoughts are welcome.

It's hard to make a subjective judgement like that. To me, my LCP feels like more of a quality product than my PF9 -- but I think much of that is in the finish. I imagine the LC9 would be similar. I expect both of them to last a long time, and those that I know that have had issues with Kel Tek have said their customer service is very good and they fix issues with no questions, for what it's worth. My issue with Kel Tek is more they seem to put products on the street and let the customers find the problems. To their credit, however, they clearly fix the issues in later production runs of the same guns. I have had zero problems with my PF9 since break in.

Would I pay $100 more for a Ruger than a Kel Tek? Probably so. But I would definitely want to shoot both before deciding that for sure. If the LC9 has the same very long trigger pull the LCP has I may reconsider that position. At least for $100 difference...

Forgive me if I'm stating the obvious, but also keep in mind for your wife that smaller does not equal easier to handle. (Where's Champ with the TWSS?) My wife is much more comfortable with the .357 magnum from my Ruger revolver with a 6" barrel than she is with either the LCP or PF9 that I own. I'm not saying get a huge revolver -- but do consider something with a little more weight to it. The pocket 9's have a lot of recoil and at least to someone with my very modest skill level take a fair amount of practice to accurately shoot...and they're not particularly fun at the range, either. The most comfortable "range gun" that was also somewhat concealable that I've ever shot was a Sig P239 in 9mm with Hogue grips. Not huge, but it certainly could not be confused for a pocket gun like the LC9 or PF9 could. I'm still annoyed my friend sold that without letting me know!
