Could someone with some sense (not D80, please) give us folks not living in North Louisiana a quick synopsis of where all this stands? The last I heard was that the issue died in BR because LSU didn't want the merge and some of the key reps (or senators, Can't remember which) said they were against it. I think some of those chaps were term limited, if I remember correctly???

Also it was holding up Reneau's retirement, which I guess now is set for next year.

    Inquiring minds want to know!

I spoke to Dr. Guice and Dr. Napper last week at the Houston Tailgate. Both of them indicated that an LSUS merger is still high on the agenda. It's not likely to happen until we have a new president in place though. The issue is tabled for now. Not exactly dead.

I concur, but would add that there were "other forces" involved besides the pro-lsu crowd that muddied the water. But strong forces still exist for the merger because it makes overwhelming economic sense for all parties and that is why it WILL happen, particularly if the next president is one who can assist in brokering a deal with the "other forces."

Re: The (LA Tech/LSUS) Merger Thread II

Wow. Check out our newest professor, Wayne Hogue's comment:

Talk about complete misunderstanding John! Wow, after all this time, and all the media attention, and folks still don't know about the differences in the universities here in town!

LSUS and LSU Health are two completely separate and barely connected organizations. Their only connection is they are governed by the same board. Hardly anything at all flows between the two schools. The med school is not, and never was, a part of the merger discussion. This is strictly about LSUS, the little failing undergraduate university on Youree drive.

Of course the worst misconception, usually intentional, is equating LSUS and LSU—LSUS has about as much in common with LSU Health as it does LSU.

Also, the merger discussion back in the spring was not even remotely about a take-over, Tech was not involved until we asked them to come to the table. The LSU system had 40 years to bring a comprehensive university to S/B without success, so we decided it was time to go a different direction.

What great comments by Hogue. Great hire by Tech and terrible political move by LSUS. This is the direction to take i. e., develop Tech's programs in S'port in existing Tech facilities. BPCC continues to grow their enrollment, LSUS continues to shrink down. Just let LSUS die on the vine.
