In an article this am in Memphis Commercial Appeal, Liberty Bowl executive director Steve Ehrhart said "We just felt it was in our best long-term interest as we get into contract negotiations next year for future games in the ever-changing college football climate, that we establish a relationship with a BCS conference such as the Big 12." In other words, we were once again screwed by the System.
We should make sure of that. We don't want them and don't need them- we will have tie-ins with CUSA. I would never go watch TECH play there again. The I-bowl is a loser bowl and has been for years. They are an SEC wanna be and don't mind the leftovers and accepting last place. They have a sucky game and deserve it.
I was originally pissed at Bruce and crew, though not that mad given what I thought were the circumstances. Now, I believe most of the blame is with the Indy Bowl. You talk about a lack of business acumen, that place is a joke. They had Ohio in their back pocket the whole time, they could have waited. Of course, either out of pride or sheer stupidity or both, they give us an ultimatum and go ask Ohio immediately. I hope no one goes to the bowl, and I hope we never play there again, at least until they get a board that isnt complete with morons.
710 KEEL has reported twice this morning that Tech turned down the I-bowl. Who's putting out all this misinformation?
If we didn't turn them down why aren't we playing in it? They called us 3 times to ask us to play in the game.
I firmly believe that the blame of this debacle rests firmly with Bruce. Yes, the Independence Bowl made a RIDICULOUS decision to make us come to a decision on our bowl future before we had truly examined all the options. They knew they could force us into 2 decisions. 1) We take the Independence Bowl automatically and this board melts down that a 9-3 Dawg team is stuck in Shreveport, or 2) Force us into a gamble where we had NO certainty of anything working out in our favor. This means that someone over there either firmly LOATHES us as a program or someone here that leads our program.
Either way, Bruce gambled with something that is SOO much bigger than him. He gambled with players careers and how they will view their careers here. He gambled with future recruits, money, fans loyalty, and the view of our program on a NATIONAL scale. While others may pretend that this incident is isolated, let's not fool ourselves. This is one of the only times I can remember a 9 win football team missing a bowl game when there were THIS MANY bowl opportunities.
In the end, it doesn't matter. Bruce's and our university's decision to take a gamble, no matter what the percentages, was a complete disrespect to all of our player's hard work and time spent trying to develop this program over the past few years. It is an insult to our player's intelligence to have them put their trust in an administration that could so blatantly disregard their careers and dreams of playing in a bowl game period, no matter where it is. How can we ask our future players to continue to trust this organization to take care of them when they have failed them in such a MONUMENTAL way?
710 KEEL is no friend of Tech....
Here is the team that lost 4 of its last 5 games which the I Bowl was worried about someone stealing from them:
