When i decided to enter the field, I knew that some people would not want to see a PA, but I also knew that there are many that just want to be treated by a qualified healthcare professional and prefer to not have to wait to get an appointment with a very busy doctor weeks later. To say that you are getting an inferior service is plain incorrect though.
When my wife and I go for baby check-ups we end up seeing a PA half the time and experience no drop in the level of service or care.

A better analogy for the relationship of (doctor : PA) would be (project architect : intern architect) with a drafter more comparable to an LPN

Not really. Project architects and intern architects are both still architects. A PA is not even close to an MD.

PA's go to school for 2 years (1 year in classroom, 1 year in clinic) and require no specialty training.

MD's go to school for 4 years (2 years in classroom, 2 years in clinic) and then require an additional 3-5 years of rigorous specialty training as a resident and/or fellow. If you go by hours worked during residency, it's really 6-10 years worth of specialty training.

MD and specialty board certification are also significantly more extensive than PA certification.

Most PA's may be good at the basic services they provide, but they do not have near the education or training that MD's have. There's really no comparison.

During those 6-10 years of specialty training that MD's are receiving, PAs are gaining similar hours and valuable experience in their field of choice on the job. While i can agree that you are correct in saying the level of training is incomparable, experience is the most important factor for healthcare providers. To discredit a PA for their level of training you also have to consider how much more experience that they receive on the job during the time when MDs are in training.

PA's and NP's are extentions of the doctor. Nothing less and nothing more. They extend the doctor's time, so that the doc can provide the expertise. Our docs are not threatened by them, they are thankful for them. Our agencies utilize them for routine check -ups and they are supervised by a doctor. It makes all the sense in the world to bring down medical costs and we have done that for the taxpayer. They are highly qualified and I would use one for my ordinary needs. To not utilize them is wasteful. There are times when I would MUCH rather see a PA or NP, than a doctor. There are other times that only a doctor would work.

As for psych., when someone has been in services for having a chronic mental illness for 10 years and comes in once a quarter for a check up and med check, this is invaluable. If someone becomes unstable (even a hint of it from the NP/PA or case worker), they see a doctor. That makes medical and fiscal sense!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In related Shreveport medical news, Christus Schumpert is closing its doors...its operations will move to Christus Highland. Also, the Sutton Children's Medical Center will shrink and move its operations to Christus Highland. About 200 people will lose their jobs as a result of the closures.

you beat me to it. I was going to post this news and say Tech should consider negotiating a bargain deal for the facilities and use the former Schumpert campus as a base for our new Shreveport operations. We would have room to grow, plenty of housing, and classroom space. Much of the existing medical facilities can be used for expanded nursing and optometry programs. Its centrally located close to downtown, close to the historic South Highlands, easily accessible from both interstates 20 and 49, and would show the Shreveport community we are invested in the future of higher education in the area!

then again it may not be a great idea...who knows (I put a whole 90 seconds of thought into it)

This is sad for Shreveport. Anyone that has kids that have had to go elsewhere to the ER verses Sutton's will understand that it will be greatly missed.

I would love it, but I bet that property is expensive.

Shreveport needs to wake up before it is REALLY too late.

In addition to classroom space and decent housing in the old hospital rooms, I'm sure parts of Christus Schumpert could be converted into some sort of innovation center/lab for small business and technology firms. There are already check-in areas with receptionists, a cafeteria, gift shops, green spaces, and adequate parking spaces/garages at Schumpert that can be upgraded if Tech could get a good deal on the property.

Why don't we make a plan in which we say we are buying the property and doing all that stuff to show our commitment to growth and academic excellence and present it to the Big12 and the ACC to try to secure an invite? It's the same thing the Cajuns are doing for C-USA with their facilities plan. After all, there's a better chance of this being done than the Cajuns' plan.
