I don't agree with that at all.
Both made big lack-of-character mistakes when they were younger. They were both forgiven, and both changed their ways.
The one you are questioning has since done more good for more people that any of us could ever dream of doing.

Do you all really not understand what I'm trying to say? I never maligned Phil's morals or character. In fact, I think the world's a better place because of him and his family and all they have done. You all are getting so defensive because people point out, rightfully so, that Phil is not the model alumnus. That fact hasn't been disproved. It's only been countered by the declaration that he's a great Christian. I agree that he is a great Christian, and I'll say furthermore, I'm glad that he is able to be associated with our school. However, it was and still is my opinion that he deserves no more praise as an alumnus than others who have chosen not to be involved because their interests are not supporting Tech especially considering he was given free tuition. And for what it's worth, as far as I can see it was only one person who really attacked the character of Phil. The others who understood what I'm saying only agreed that he doesn't deserve to be exalted by Tech fans any more than those who aren't famous yet have never ceased to give of their time and money. As far as Phil being 3x the human being that Karl is, it'd be hard to know since I doubt anyone at Tech has dealt with Phil enough to see what type of donor he is. How do we know that he wouldn't be as onerous to deal with as Karl is? Personally, I'm not a fan of Karl and some of his antics, but you can't deny that as far as help to the university, Karl has done infinitely more than Phil has, but thanks for helping to prove my point.
Somehow this conversation has put people on the defensive about Phil. I am glad he is a Christian and a great one at that. I have to agree with Dirty Dawg a little in that I don't think he should be exhalted as some sort of super Tech alumnus. He is by all acounts a great human being and he does quite a bit of charity work which is wonderful. If he were more involved in Tech that would certainly boost my opinion of him. The fact that he is an alumni is basically just an interesting footnote for an interesting individual.
I remember Karl taking several million dollars worth of equipment to south Mississippi and helping the folks there recover from Katrina. A lot of people never heard of this because he didn't tour all the television shows talking about it. He went to Mississippi because he didn't want to get the publicity for doing it like he would have gotten in New Orleans. Didn't he buy the floor for the TAC and buy all those weights in the fieldhouse? I bet that cost him more than $100. Has Phil Robertson ever made even a $100 donation to Tech? He's never returned to the campus and he only lives 30 miles down the road. I was in ACE hardware the other day and saw some of those little Chinese flashlights that usually quit working after you use them a couple of times with the Duck Commander stuff all over it. I expect any day to start seeing LSU stuff with the Duck Commander on it. I noticed on a website that Robertson himself is worth 15 million. If he donated to Tech a percent of his net worth compared to what a lot of us on this board donate, that would be a huge chunk of change. I won't praise Robertson because it would diminish my praise for other people that deserve it.

Let me add this - I'm very appreciative for what Karl does for our University but that does change how I view him in other lights...

Two wealthy, famous Tech alums --
One has maintained little connection to his alma mater, but is by all accounts an admirable, stand-up kind of guy.
The other has given back a great deal to his university, but is widely whispered to be a huge jerk.
Is that pretty much it?
No it's not. Karl has helped a lot of people that don't have any ties to Tech. My son went to 2 of his basketball camps when he was around 10-12 years old. If a kid showed up at the camp without proper shoes Karl gave him a pair of shoes. I paid for my son to go to these camps, but, if kids couldn't pay for them they got in free. I've never seen a side of Karl that showed he was a jerk and he always welcomes everybody to his tailgate and he talks to anybody that wants to talk. He's been a great ambassador for Tech. I've never heard any of those whispers about what a mean person he is.
