I agree with this. In 1987 and 1988 we played young guys on the OL even thou we were undersized. I have never been a fan of fat a OL. Smaller quicker OL are better IMHO. They move there feet and get better position on the DL or LB.

Wouldn't you agree he had more to work with than what Dooley inherited from Bicknell?
Having letter winners at WR and RB doesn't do you much good when you can't block or throw.

IMO, we are getting better at QB and have gotten a little better at OL. We are still pretty bad on OL when the defense blitzes, stunts, or when the other DL has talent. Our screen passing improved against Kansas when we moved Banks inside and we made some good passes downfield against Army's not so talented defense. When given time, Higgins has made some good passes.

We have never been good against the service academies stopping the option. Their level of execution is usually going to be better than ours because that is all they do. IMO, you have to defend it much more aggressively to give your self a chance to force more third and longs (which we were still very bad at stopping Saturday). As bad as we have always been against that offense, that was probably the worst defensive game plan I have ever seen against it. Army kept sending their wideouts down the field leaving our DEs in the 5-2 to maintain the edge. They played too tentatively and without enough speed to do that effectively. Took far too long to try something different, and when did it was so easy for Army to see our adjustment and they knew exactly what to do to hurt us with our adjustment. I far prefer Spangler's strategy of pre-snap shifting to what Dameron drew up.

This may have been explained and I just missed it, but does anybody know the story on why Petey Perot left? He was like an elder statesman at Tech and was a top notch O-line coach. I'm sure he was guaranteed a spot on the new staff (hell Ed Jackson has been around since Crowton I think, maybe longer). What the hell, he just picks up and moves to Southern Miss?

He was probably friends with Monken (who used to coach with him at Tech, I think). I doubt he had any guarantee of the new coach keeping him. A bird in the hand...

If I remember right, he left before we hired Holtz. Guess he did not like the uncertainty (and USM made him a good offer).

Correct me if I am wrong about the timing.

Right.... HAHAHAHAHAHA! Oh yea, that's it. RIDICULOUS.

I will say I have previously joined those calling for the firing of Oakes, Richard and Weatherspoon - all were given adequate time to make a difference - the fact that our fans are posting FIRE HOLTZ after the first couple of games, makes me sick. It's our fans who this reflects poorly on -- an embarrassment to the Tech family.

    Re: Fire Holtz

Our performance on the field is the only thing that reflects poorly on the Tech family.

I'm getting the impression, you don't feel the sence of urgency that most of our fans feel. This I a critical point in our program's development and a pivotal point in college football as a whole.

We do not have one season (NOT ONE) to waste and rebuilt. We HAVE to win, raise our budget, raise our attendance, and keep pushing for a better conference and larger markets for our program.

That being said, if I saw enough improvement to stay optimistic about our future, I'd be more willing to give him time. I don't see it. Our level of competition is getting worse and we are also digressing.

I do not care about "glimpses" or flashes on a micro scale. An acceptable "glimpse" would result in an actual WIN not a moral victory of getting a first down or stopping someone on third down.

This team has no confidence or swagger and that's a reflection of leadership.

I think Army and NC State are better teams than us. Tulane and Kansas are not (but it's close).

Army is more disciplined, better conditioned and better coached than we are -

    Not more talented -

Everyone KNEW that defense was key to that game - when they marched the first two drives down our throats is the time to make adjustments both offensively and defensively

Atleast TRY to outscore them and make them PASS -

They ran 78 plays and threw 3 damned passes - it was a joke!

He we go again... "this team has no swagger"

Who is the team leader? Who is leading the "swagger" you want so badly?
These boys are clearly shell-shocked. No General ringing the bell. No Colby. No Miles. No hurry-up offense. And a new coach?! And, again (broken record) 2-3 returning starters on offense.

What's to SWAG about? Who's SWAGGING?

They'll find themselves.... and if they don't then call for the coach's head. BUT give the team some time.... let them find their new leaders and let's see what they're made of.

    How much time?

I admire your patience and ability to remain calm in pressure situations. I believe there is a time and place to remain calm, but sometimes drastic action is the only course. I am leaning toward drastic action in our current blight.

I firmly believe in the urgency of our situation. If we go 1-11 or 2-10 it will completely erase any momentum we built scratching and clawing over the past 5-6 seasons.

It sends the wrong message to our fringe fans and alumni that loosing is ok and not to demand more out of our university's leadership (coaches included).

Time? It's been 5 games. A season is only 12 games long and this team has been fully together since at least June. If they don't know who their leaders and playmakers are by now, they aren't going to find them.

Also, your swagger comes from knowing you are the most prepared and in the best shape you can be to play the game you love to play. If you can't go out there every Saturday and fully believe in yourself and your team to win the game, what the hell are you doing out there in the first place? This type of attitude emanates from the coaching staff. If they are confident in the game plan and the players they are putting out there, that confidence will get through to the team and show up on Saturday. To me, there is no confidence in anything. Watching the game, it feels like this team isn't attacking and trying to FORCE a win, more like they are reacting and trying not to LOSE. Once again, this is coaching.

Dawg, How much is Holtz paying you? It's obvious you are sold on his great coaching skills and amazing past achievements. Seriously dude are you watching a different team on Saturday's? I think your alone on this, LET ME REMIND YOU, HOLTZ IS A HORRIBLE COACH.

I hope T Mac is planning to have a serious sit down with Holtz about this team's performance. Holtz needs to feel some heat from his boss.
