I would very much debate the bolded part. I'm not sure what game some of you were watching, but after scoring 24 points in the first half, we went right back to our craptastic slow, plodding, run up the middle offensive scheme for the entire second half. We should be thankful that Dixon broke that 72-yarder from deep in our own end, otherwise we leave El Paso with a loss last night. And that's the most frustrating part: if Peterson would keep calling the game like he called in the first half, we probably leave the stadium with a two-score win. As it was, I am very happy we won, but in no way would I be patting ANY of our coaches on the back. That was the same team UTSA beat in El Paso by almost 3 TDs.
Meachem just dropped a TD. Fire Payton
You said we should have beat UTEP by 17 points just because we had more talent than them. King and Guillot are 2 of our more talented players and they didn't play most of the game. That has to be taken into account. Mistakes and injuries do impact scores.
If he does something stupid, I'll call him out. If y'all say something stupid, I'll call you out.
1). I agree. I probably would have put him back in if he said he was ready, but I would not have called a run play. Could have been the OC in the box calling that play.
2). Meh. If our players are so great, make a play!
3). I thought UTEP had the ball the last 6 minutes of the game?
It was our last possession BEFORE covering the onside kick. We had a 10-point lead AND the ball. Obviously the longer we kept the ball away from UTEP, the more difficult it was for them to catch us. Didn't understand why we didn't milk the clock for every second before calling our timeout.
We were discussing that on here as it was happening. I mentioned that we will see if Holtz is who USF fans say he is and sits on this lead or if he is aggressive and tries to score again. Dixon picked up a 1st down in 2 plays. Then he was stuffed for no gain and stuffed for no gain, and then we threw a deep pass down the sideline that was incomplete. I don't remember the lost 20 seconds, or the timeout. I was just happy that the USF fans were wrong. (I probably would have run Dixon on 3rd down to keep the clock moving). But I would have been fired for not being agressive enough.![]()
I've been reading (and posting every now and again on) this board for six years. Just trying to talk a few of us off the cliff...... It's not that bad, just take a deep breath and relax.
If I remember correctly, the head coaching position was posted publicly, and we each had the chance to apply. He is (and was) the best candidate to apply. Now let's give him a chance to do his job.
We are 1-1 (third in the division).
One of the things that has really gotten under my skin with Holtz:
Army is ranked 115 in the country at pass defense and 88 in rush defense . . . so we pass only 61% of our plays (should have a hell of a lot more).
UTEP is ranked 121 (only two teams worse) at pass defense and 118 in rush defense (pretty bad too) . . . we rush 71% of our plays.
Why not take advantage of the GIFT of incredibly crappy pass defense over the last two games and start building our passing game while we can? These last two games were huge opportunities to script a passing extravaganza for Higgins et al. Running Dixon over and over again was effective, but it seemed like a pretty lazy way out for the coaching staff.
P.S. - Start taking the ball when you win the coin toss!!!
This thread is beyond hopeless! We are not firing Holtz. He has been coaching for 14 yrs and won CUSA championships. He has had team beat N Dame and ranked in top 15. Folks wanted to fire before he coached first game. He will leave on his own term. Hopefully he will leave for a big time program because he was successful here. Let me write that again!! The better his next job is, the better we have been. Start hoping you are wrong.
Yes, this is why many of us question this Coaching staff. Good Coaches admit when they make mistakes and make changes.
Why not try other receivers and give them some experience like the one from Shreveport. How about Grant Childress from Tyler?
