Defense wins championships, so it is never irrelevant.

But, bear in mind our D was less than stellar vs. NC State, Army, UTEP (a win anyway) and mediocre against Lamar, Tulane and UNT. The D has played well vs. Kansas and FIU.

Now, comparing it to last year, wow! it appears the D is awesome this year. In reality, it is marginally better. Just that the level of competition is so woeful this year (compared to last year).

The D played well enough to win at KU and FIU, and we are 1-1 in those two efforts.

Agree. If you look at our 2 conference losses, those teams out-defensed us. (Tulane and UNT don't play great offense). We beat the 2 teams in conference who did not play good defense (even with our terrible offense).

USM is even worse. We have two weeks to prepare so we should be favored by at least 3.

Could someone explain how hiring Holtz makes any sense for Tech? It really seems like we only hired him because he is Lou Holtz's son. He has a history of being conservative and he won just 3 games last year.

4 times in a row the horse is too big to make a dent in it. Our coaches selection committee really sucks.

Yep and what did usm do that everyone is calling for? Fired their coach after one year. Holtz has been less than impressive but I am not sure if anything is worse for a program or harder to overcome than 3 different coaches in 3 years. That is exactly where they are and I fear we would be as well.

I think they will be able to recruit and land some key guys who started looking based on last year. A good year usually shows up the next recruiting class not immediately so hopefully we can find a way to win 6 and build off that. This is a very crucial class with so many needs.

So you like Holtz, "3 yards and a cloud of dust" scheme? That's not what he said he would do when he was hired?

I seriously doubt USM is where they are because of three coaches in three years. While it isn't good. Another year of Ellis Johnson would have been worse.

Well, I hate to retract my previous statements about most of this season being on coaching, but if we can only muster 1 offensive touchdown against FIU, there has GOT to be a talent problem. Clearly, Dykes did not leave us with many game changing players, or else they haven't hit their stride yet (but it's been 7 games). I'm just very disappointed going in to next year, because I know Holtz will get another year, and I just don't see how we can change our talent enough to be competitive in a one year time span. Especially with the lack luster recruiting class that has been assembled up to this point.

It seems like Johnson's teams were more competitive than Monken's teams. Any chance they fire Monken this year?

Doubtful. They dug themselves a deep hole financially and they'll just have to live with what Monken does at least for another year.

Yes, if we had talent on offense we would have blown out Lamar and FIU just by showing up. Our coaches will have the offseason to find out ways to score TDs with poor OL play. Quick passes is the best answer, but we'll need players who can do something with the ball after the catch.

There might be a lesson to learn there.
