    So Far This Season

I have been watching the Lady Techster basketball team for 34 seasons. Looking at things so far this season, and I have attended all home games, I ask the question; Are we as BAD as our record indicates? Are we as BAD as our play indicates? I'm not looking to blame because I am at a complete loss. I have opinions but no answers...something is BAD wrong somewhere.

I saw a lot of promise in the first couple of games, but it has been bad the last few (except for UNO, which was a gimmie, anyway). We should not have lost to Nicholls and we played horrible against AState. I just have to keep hoping something clicks, because we really do have talent and will have a lot more of it next year. I have to believe that this will turn around, because I can't do anything else.

Does the program have to be complete driven in the ground (we are almost there now) before a coaching change is made? Our only win against a division III team and we are by no means competitive with any decent program. If the talent is there and the team is not performing, then you can logically lay the blame on coaching. We are past due for a change.

Come to think of it, all of our women athletic programs are subpar. What gives?

Just to be fair, UNO is D I again. They are in the southland. May play like D III, but that's another story.

Part of it is a chemistry problem. Some folks on here tell me I do not know what I am talking about, but I know there are locker room issues.

What's different this year than last year or the year before? Nothing. It's not a chemistry problem - its a coaching problem. I appreciate the optimism of some......mine exhausted 2-3 years ago. While this team will and should improve so will every other club and the outcome will be yet another dismal season.
We all know the definition of insanity and that is exactly what WBB at Tech has become - insanity.

Doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. Not gonna happen. Our athletes, fans and program tradition deserve much better. There is a whole new generation that have no idea what real Lady Techster basketball looks like and if we do not make radical changes soon they may never.

I look at Wichita State women's BB team; they have no winning tradition or excitement about the program. In comes Jody Adams, (former Tenn player), and she turns the program around in a couple of years. They won the conference last year, went to their first NCAA torunament, are recruiting well, and are winning again this year. I can only attribute this to good coaching. It is just a whole new ballgame for that team.

The number one problem for the Techsters is the lack of a dominit post player down low and obviously bad coaching, even a good coach can make medioccore players look good!
And we have a great class coming in next year, seems I have been saying that for too many years now!
Even it, doesn't have any player over 6 foot on it!
All this and I am one of TSpoon's biggest fans!
    ***
Vinca, maybe the one player on the team that with more playing time on the floor even if she fouls out every game, could make a difference down the stretch for this years team!
And decide the future of TSpoon!

I totally agree about the post players which leads me to the question. Why did Tavasha Anderson and Jasmine Bryant not stay for their last year? They were just as productive (although minimal ) as the other posts but would have provided a little more experience, strength and depth this year (only my opinion ).

However, what puzzles me the most is the playing time of Jelena. IMO she may not be the most athletic guard but she has one of the highest basketball IQ's on the team if not the highest and has shown that she can compete when given the opportunity.

    Re: So Far This Season

Times are bad, so according to the time-warpers on this board, that means it's time for me and others to show up and post. I don't want to disappoint them.

I read in another chain that someone said the "biggest problem" for the Techsters is a lack of a post-presence. In my opinion, that statement is an even bigger problem than the lack of a post player. If you are a fan and you think the Techsters are just a good player away from being a good program, I think you are not in touch with reality. At all.

I admire Spoon the player. And while I appreciate "hope" just like any other person, those who refuse to acknowledge the cliff ahead as they are rapidly racing toward it while hoping that the cliff will disappear…um, in my profession, those people are called delusional.

Spoon has lost her authority with the team, and her celebrity means nothing. There is no reason to continue this, and she should step down. Tech cannot fire her. They have proven that already. There is no leadership and backbone…or at the very least, there is no respect for the program. Then again, that has been demonstrated in the past so it should come as no surprise to any of the fans. Spoon should step down. That is only my opinion, and it carries no weight. It is simply an opinion.

    Re: So Far This Season

The admin is at fault for the way they hired Spoon in the first place. She should have been hired as a lead assistant to a quality coach. Given the chance to grow into the role and learn (the way Kim did under Leon--she was hardly a great coach early on), Spoon might have developed. Now, she's just not able to manage the team. She's had plenty of time to prove it. It has been a decade since we've been a mildly competitive team at the national level--a couple of quick exits from the NCAA tourney doesn't change that.

We need a coach who knows how to build a program and how to develop players. It's not going to be easy since we're no longer a name that means much to people. For a good bit of the country, we are basically what I thought of SFA 12-15 years ago: a team that was good before many good teams existed. We either stop the bleeding soon or we resign ourselves to mediocrity. There aren't enough good women's bball players for there to be good teams in the middle of CUSA. We've either got to get a lot better or recognize we aren't going anywhere.
