Today, June 2 in history:

• The Vandals sacked Rome in 455. I like it even better when the Dawgs sacked the Vandals!!
• The "Intolerable Acts" passed in 1774 allowed governors in colonial America to house British soldiers in uninhabited houses, outhouses, barns, or other buildings if suitable quarters not provided, and helped spur on our call for independence. The latest "intolerable act" by a legislative body is giving tax money to a shoddily run bowl.
• Dead Poets Society premiered in 1989. It's in my top 2 - 3 movies of all time. The "Dead Conference Society" premiers anytime Karl Benson is hired as a commissioner.

Today's birthday gal is is 77 and became famous for her passion and kissable, some would even say "hot" lips in a 1970 movie set in the Korean War.

And, from a previous post, "the straw that stirs the drink" (besides 70TECHGRAD) was actually also "Mr. October," Reggie Jackson!

Today's birthday boy (June 3) was an American political figure who lived from 1808 until 1889. His first name comes from our third US President, and his last name is that of a Louisiana Governor/singer. His birthday is a state holiday in Alabama only, celebrated the first Monday in June, and yesterday 30,000 Alabama state employees got the day off. All but "essential personnel." (Question: If Sun Belch conference staff were all off but "essential emloyyees" would Benson be there?)

Also born on June 3 was Dr. Charles Drew African American surgeon who created the first blood bank, which saved thousands of lives during World War II. Without his revolutionary work the American Red Cross Blood Bank would never exist. He protested against the practice of racial segregation in the donation of blood, as it lacked scientific foundation, and he was fired because of it. Dr. Drew passed away in 1950.

The PC police were slapped!! Ya gotta love it!!! Dickinson, North Dakota High School's mascot is the "Midgets." The issue of changing the mascot was brought to a vote on June 3, 1997, and was voted down by residents approximately 4 - 1. The school board had voted to drop the school nickname and mascot in the summer of 1996. Before a replacement mascot could be found, a public outcry led to the recall of three board members in November of that year.

And then Gov. Bill Clinton wearing dark sunglasses in 1992 on the Arsenio Hall Show played the sexaphone. Er, saxophone.
