I agree. It's the very FIRST thing I thought of when I saw this latest story.


By the way, did anybody else notice in the story that Stapleton --and his attorney-- SPECIFICALLY requested the University of Florida be included in the list of schools he could transfer to?? But T-Mac shot it down. Good for T-Mac.

The two spoke via phone that afternoon when Goliday verbally requested that Florida be added to the list of 21 schools.

Goliday wrote McClelland again June 29, this time regarding national media inquiries.........

.....McClelland responded to the new transfer requests later that day and provided three attachments — one in response to the June 26 letter, one to be used as Stapleton's new release and an updated non-conference schedule.

McClelland released Stapleton to 16 of the 22 schools requested. He denied the Florida request, along with the four schools in Louisiana and Ole Miss, which fell under the 2016 opponents stipulation.

I thought the same when reading it. The story was over kill. Way TMI, most of which could have already been reported.

I wouldn't say media is all about CYA now, and I haven't spoken with Sean about this situation. However, I will say the last time I publicly criticized a fellow Gannett paper, I had people at the paper who tried to get me fired. I'm not saying that will stop me from doing it again, but I wouldn't encourage someone from following in my footsteps.

The heart of the matter is the claimed interference while he was still a part of the basketball team by members of this board. That is a very serious thing for a reporter to put into print. From an earlier post by someone on this board in exchanges of emails stating that there was inappropriate contact, Isabella's return email basically said, prove it. Not an unfair request given the gravity of the claim and what the consequences would be for those doing the contact and the consequences for the reporter if there was no proof. We may have been asking too much of Isabella in that respect. I think he clarified the process of what went down as deeply as he could given the evidence. Two things need to occur. 1. Isabella can't get flustered over what is written on this board. 2. We need to be cognizant of the fact that everything we think and post on this board can not be acted on or put into print as we would like without confirmation. I love the enthusiasm of the TECH loyal. But looking out for TECH could sometimes mean treading a little lighter when it spills over to the press who we all wish would always put TECH in the best light possible.

CNN goes to extraordinary measures to verify everything that is reported. They have a huge room of people who do research on the various stories. When trying to follow a national news story, it always seems to me that CNN is a little slower on reporting details of developing stories (e.g. an on-going active shooter situation) than the other news organizations. They will sometimes preface things by saying "CNN has received unconfirmed reports...". So, I'll go to Fox, MSNBC, CBS, etc. to get the rumors, and then back to CNN to get what has been confirmed. Many times BBB is the first to report a story, but there have been times when the story doesn't pan out.

May not be a good thing, but nobody here is trying to get cred by being the first to report. It pisses people off and pisses Tech admin off when THE BBB is correct. That's why we have silly shit like red Ts and puppy dawgs on helmets, but nobody in the Admin admits to making the stupid call. THE BBB calls out the stupid crap Tech does. We always have and will continue to do it.

I won't bother listing stories that have not panned out, but you know as well as I do that not every "story" that has been posted by EVERY BBB member has turned out to be accurate. I didn't specify any particular members. It was more of an overall statement. Some members of BBB have a good reputation for being spot on.

I disagree with you that it's black and white. Journalists actually take ethics training. There is a certain code that we are to uphold. While I personally disagree with what Mike White and his staff have done, there's nothing technically "unethical" about it as it pertains to our journalistic standard.
