Would you rather have American citizen providing minimum wage jobs and pursuing the American Dream?
I would rather have American citizens owning the businesses. This gave me pause, so I had to go to Cruz's website to see what he's talking about. Here are some of his statements on reforming legal immigration:

"The purpose of legal immigration should be to grow the economy, not to displace American workers. Under no circumstances should legal immigration levels be adjusted upwards so long as work-force participation rates remain below historical averages." (then he goes on to say he would halt all legal immigration until unemployment rates normalize).

Then he goes on to say that first we have to secure the border and investigate H1B Visa abuse (overstaying after Visas expire, and some companies hire H1B employees at the expense of American citizens).

Basically, what he's saying is we need to stop illegal immigration (people who are stealing from us), get our economy in order, then start being very selective in our legal immigration policies (attract the best and brightest because they are the ones who come to America and start businesses and employ US citizens). But not until our economy is back on it's feet, and not at the expense of American workers. It's a long plan with lots of details if you want to go to his site and read up. He's put a lot of thought into it.

No one talking about "displac(ed) American workers" has put a lot of thought into anything on immigration.

I can't figure out how this statement makes any sense at all. Can you expound a bit?

Illegal immigrants, even legal immigrants, are not displacing Americans from jobs. Foreigners in foreign countries as jobs are outsourced, yes. But here, no. Immigrants mostly take the jobs no American wants no matter how desperate they are because it is "beneath" them, doesn't pay worth a damn, have almost no benefits, etc. Citizens aren't being displaced from those jobs. We're choosing not to take them.

Being nativist about jobs and immigration shows a person is not putting any thought into it.

    Here's an idea....

deport all illegals, period. And then cut off welfare to those Americans who won't take these jobs that are beneath them. Either they'll take a job, or starve, or be shot down by the National Guard during a food riot. Any of those goes a long way to solving many of our problems.

Okay, thanks. I think Cruz is talking about bringing in more high qualified legal immigrants, but not at the risk of displacing American workers. You are talking about the past and he is talking about the future.

H1B visas go to "specialty occupations." So this would be a different group than the ones plucking chickens and picking fruit and cleaning hotels.

But the H1B process already contains provisions that are intended to protect U.S.citizens. There is a cap on how many H1B visa statuses are issued per fiscal year, for one thing. An employer also has to show that they are paying a "prevailing wage" and not just hiring someone willing to work for lower than the going rate. The employer also has to make a number of attestations such as stating that they aren't being hired to break a strike or something similar.

I think what Cruz is suggesting is raising the cap. He may also prefer tighter regulations and additional reporting, which actually serves two purposes, besides the obvious it also lowers the incentive to hire a non-immigrant worker because the cost to the employer in man hours goes up with additional reporting requirements (it makes it more work than it already is to hire someone who isn't already a LPR or citizen).

If the Feds just did this and National Defense we would be in great shape.

    Hope it's not too late.

Rubio and Kasich have likely handed the nomination to Trump.

Kasich won't get out. I bet he gets more of the Rubio voters than Cruz will. It has to be one on one for Cruz to win. Kasich will go down as the guy who killed the Republic.

I want to go on record that I really, really like Marco Rubio the man. The Gang of 8 would have destroyed the country, but everybody makes mistakes. He's got a good heart and was one of the original Tea Party guys who gave credibility to the conservative movement... and took it all the way to a presidential run against another Tea Party guy in Cruz. He is living the American dream and proof that you don't have to be an elite to reach that level in this country.
