Just handing him the job would have been a disservice to Ryan as a player, and the team as a whole. Creating competition is what brings the best out in players. Ryan was playing very well last year in camp until he hurt his arm. Not saying he won the job, but many say he was right on par with Driskel. Will Ryan lead us to 8-10 wins this year? I have no idea, but saying that Skip brought in two transfers shows no competition is just plain irrational thinking. Skip saw a void of older QBs in the QB room and brought in competition.
If you think Sokol and Driskel were not told they would be the starter you are dreaming. No chance either comes unless they know they are the one under center. All the talk about their being a competition was lip service. Also, no way he was on par with Driskel. I am sorry, but if you cannot see the difference in the two you are not watching the game. Their talent level is far from close.

He may have turned down transfers this year because of depth, but I believe it has a lot to do with sending a horrible message to all of our QBs present and future. It would say you are not good enough and we will bring in better talent to transfer in. I think it would be tough to recruit QB talent if they new we would have brought in a transfer QB 3 years in a row.

So you think he told 3rd stringer from Iowa Cody Sokol who had never thrown at D1 pass that he could walk on campus in August a month before the season and was the no doubt starter? You talk a lot about Higgins throwing INT's which is true, but you do realize Sokol threw 13 himself which is a lot right? When Driskel said he was coming did you think he would throw for 4,000 yards and 24 TDs? Not one Florida fan did, and not many Tech did either. You can say that he's much more talented, which he clearly is, but to say Driskel was a sure fire starter the second he said he committed is wrong. That dude struggled badly for two consecutive years, Skip had no way of knowing that he would come in and get all confidence back and do what he did. Could he project that he had a chance to do that? Absolutely, but after the spring game in 2015 everyone was talking about how Driskel threw 4 INTs and that cant happen and all that stuff. People were calling Auburn's Jeremy Johnson a Heisman front runner last year, dude is horrendous. People thought Colby Cameron couldn't even play D1 and he turned into the best QB we have had in 10-12 years. Its all about the offensive system, and Holtz is pretty dang good at having his system fit his QB. If Higgins cant throw a deep ball, we wont be throwing deep balls, its simple. No one can cover Trent Taylor no matter what route he runs, no one can cover Henderson because of his speed threat, and I doubt many will be able to cover Alfred Smith. We will be just fine.

I know if he actually said this, then he honored it. And I have no problem with it. And we know that Driskel had more prestigious and lucrative offers than little ole LA Tech but Skip Holtz and his integrity is what won him over.

    In Aaron Rogers' words **RELAX!!!**

Do I believe the 3rd stringer from Iowa was guarateed the starting job, Yes! Why? because it happened. Do I believe Jeff Driskel was guarateed the starting job, Yes! Why? Because it happened. I am not saying we knew that Jeff and Cody were going to have good years, and in Jeff's case a great year. No, but I do believe we all knew they were the guy. Not Ryan. I have no doubt that guys can develop and I really hope I eat crow this year. I just do not know how you watch Ryan play and say he is a starting D1 QB.

I think Higgins can throw short routes and he should have knowledge of our system. However, him not being able to throw the deep ball should scare us all. I know Henderson, McKnight, Smith, and Taylor are good WRs. However, if the defense does not have to worry about us being able to hit them in stride deep, we will be in serious trouble... and we have to throw deep balls or we will look very similiar to the 2013 team. We have a better o-line and much better WRs, but if you cannot stretch the field you are not left with many options when calling plays.

Is he lacking strength or technique throwing it deep?

Seems to throw it too high, imo. Looks more like punts than throws. But I was watching his HS highlights the other day and he threw a very nice deep pass in HS. He's got the arm strength.

Driskel didn't throw a good deep pass either, imo. He missed Carlos a bunch of times and Carlos made some incredible catches on a couple of balls too. Sokol threw a great deep pass.

I'm not judging him off of playing in mop up duty. College kids have a hard time focusing when nothing is at stake. We were winning 62-15, why not try to thread the needle and throw a TD? If it gets picked off, we are winning anyways and he learns to not make that throw when he's in a tight game. Judging off of meaningless playing time is not the best time to judge his playing. Competitive atmosphere in spring game? He played fairly well, but also missed some throw that were picked off, both deep balls. So that is something he prolly learned he needs to work on. I doubt Holtz is looking at his Southern film and being like come on Ryan, last September in the first game of season after you had a dead arm in camp you didn't thread the needle well enough in a 62-15 game. Price you're in son! I hope your one pass your threw last year has you ready! We can agree to disagree about Higgins, but I think he will have a solid year that will lead us to a bowl game which has become the expectation around here. If he throws for 2,800 yards and 17 TDs 7 INTs, runs for another 450 with 7 TDs and wins 8 games and makes it 9 with a bowl game then in my book that is another step forward for the program. I do think J'Mar will play a role in the offense with his running ability.

Another thing about his deep ball, the THREAT alone of Carlos going deep is enough to get receivers open. Because that one time that he doesn't stick his foot in the ground for a curl or out route, he is wide open and it doesn't matter how bad the pass is, its a 75 yard TD. In 2013 we didn't have one player who could even run past a linebacker much less a corner.

Oh really! So our new running back will have a crowded box to run into since our QB can't take the top off the defense! Didn't even work in 13 when we had Dixon! I'm glad you're so content with not being able to throw it deep.

Oh and Sokol threw 30/13 TD to int.
    What was Higgins? 5/9? 6/8?

Cameron was a product of the system only. He had to make zero reads (only pre snap which are simple) and the ball was out in less than two seconds. He had one of the best coordinators in the country

If rattay was as good as we want him to be, wouldn't price Wilson be taking Higgins spot? Or j'mar smith be talked about more? I'm wondering what these guys are missing because I know what Higgins has. He threw two picks against our easiest opponent last year on back to back drives ... And they were ugly. Wilson's passes look like Jay Cutler's.
