    You're being snarky, but ...

I think historians will look back on 2008 as the year the Reagan Revolution ended. I think that's when the US (as a whole) realigned from a center-right to a center-left nation.

I'd go a step further and say GWB (specifically the Iraq war & the 2007 financial collapse) had a lot to do with it. The GOP overplayed their hand and alienated a generation.

I see your point, but usually it's cyclical. FDR was as far left as Obama. LBJ's Great Society was far left, and now Obama's fundamental transformation attempt is far left. That was all in a center right country?

I don't see a conservative cycle re-emerging until we have to feel the consequences of the spending. Right now, debt is just a number, and printing money has no consequences. The bubble will burst like it did in the Soviet Union and then we will see the value of conservatism again. Right now, it's "mean" to stop printing money and have budgets.

You misunderstand -- I'm saying that the center-right era (aka Reagan Revolution) existed from 1980-2008.

GOP won 5 out of 7 elections in that stretch. And even the Dem administration in that period was markedly more centrist that FDR, LBJ, or BHO.

    I really wasn't.

That was the year of the "Republican Autopsy" in which the GOP was supposed to strengthen its relationship with Hispanics, Blacks, and women. It's obvious that hasn't happened and steps have been taken in the wrong direction.

It depends on what you mean by Reagan Revolution. When Reagan came into office the top tax rate was over 70%. We still have low tax rates. The objective seems to be to get it back up to over 70%, but there is still substantial opposition to that. If you mean a desire to make government small and liberty high, then I agree. That's over at the moment. We love big brother nowadays...and trust them. Few skeptics. Democrat politicians are adored and are becoming celebrities.

...and what have the Dems done for Blacks?

SI was speaking more broadly than tax rates or the size of govt --

I'd characterize the country's historical political cycles as fluctuating between a general trust vs. general distrust of govt action. Or, stated differently -- fluctuating between trust in public vs. private institutions as the best solution to (real & perceived) problems.

In either case, America never strays especially far from center.

A lot more than Trump. They didn't continuously hammer home the birther theory and not apologize for it like Trump.

You do know that Trump is polling less than 10% among black voters, don't you?

I agree with you. If both sides fight for the Constitution, we'll be fine regardless of which party is in office. But then there are activist judges.... that's really the threat to the country being transformed/overthrown.

It's over 1% now? Why is the birth certificate considered racist? I hear that a lot from the media, and I don't get it.

It comes from African-Americans also. You fail the GOP autopsy for not "getting it".

I'm a principle-centered guy. I believe conservatism is right for everyone. I don't aee color or class. It's not a matter of me moving, but doing a better job explaining my principles.

But I understand I am not Santa Clause, and he's tough to beat with rationality.

You need to articulate your beliefs to African-Americans and not me. That's the problem with the GOP.

Agree, but we are up against Santa.... it's very tough. That's why I say we may not see conservatism again until the government bubble bursts.

    Re: 2016 Presidential Campaign

"I apprehend no danger to our country from a foreign foe ... Our destruction, should it come at all, will be from another quarter. *-- From the inattention of the people to the concerns of their government, from their carelessness and negligence, I must confess that I do apprehend some danger. I fear that they may place too implicit a confidence in their public servants, and fail properly to scrutinize their conduct; that in this way they may be made the dupes of designing men, and become the instruments of their own undoing. Make them intelligent, and they will be vigilant; give them the means of detecting the wrong, and they will apply the remedy."
-- Daniel Webster (1782-1852), US Senator
