This is NOT a good stat. It means that Tech's D can't get off the field and gives up too many 3rd down conversions.
Why in the world would a team want to run the ball when they can just throw it.
It's amazing how a defense gets better when they're playing the absolute WORST offenses in the country...FIU, UMASS and Rice...
Tech's DC is not getting better, he's just game planning against extremely inept offenses.
FIU's offense is working way better than before they fired their coach. I think they'd beat UMass in a rematch.
I think they had 500+ yards vs MTSU. I say our D did fine vs them. Especially since one of their scoring drives were bailed out by the refs. The only reason MTSU beat them is because of 3 turnovers.
It would be great to see this years defense against a K-State, Ms State, or similar. We know we look terrible against prolific offenses and great against anemic offenses. Other than ARK, we don't know how we look against average offenses. But....scheduling is hard, so we won't know until possibly bowl season.
Its only fair since we played some pretty good offenses in MTSU, TT, and WKU. We seem to play better vs. balanced teams. We get destroyed by pass heavy teams and option teams. If you try to balance run and pass though.. we got you right where we want you!
Our D is on a good run, albeit vs bad teams. The newcomers are getting experience and might actually have some confidence for the next true test in USM.
Who?
I'm not "happy" with it, but I'm not one of those who says "fire the DC" without giving reasons. There are several reasons this defense played bad in games 2-4. One includes lack of conditioning, but nobody dares question our S&C guy. FWIW, our DC has taken the blame for the TT loss and it's probably not all on his coaching decisions. Our HC likes to tinker with things like defense and special teams from time to time.
