Defense didn't show up. We gave up TDs on just about every 4th quarter drive. We just happen to have to ball last

I can agree with 75% of your post...but I won't say our "Defense didn't show up" --- I think they could have certainly played better, but the OPTION is hard to defend against, and I think they did reasonably well with it.

That being said, why the heck don't WE run the OPTION sometimes? A LOT of defenses struggle with that scheme.

. Why do you keep posting?? Let's see-- CUSA coach of year- most wins over 4 yrs in history of Tech ( tied). 3 straight bowl wins ( beat top 25 team) and 3 straight 9 wins season. Our average "cost" of wins is one of lowest in college football. You appear to know absolutely NOTHING about college football but keep posting anyway. I would rather fire you than Coach... we better figure way to double his pay and money for assistants-- 2 new CUSA coaches getting million dollar contracts... What an incredible job Holtz has done for us!!

The option is just another take on the old wishbone or maybe what they called the "broken bone". A good defense will normally stop it. As we recognize we didn't have a "good" defense. We did stop them enough to stay ahead most of the game. Just that last wild run by their freshman and few other plays. Their few long passes hurt us almost as much. See what Temple and Army did to it. Let's see what UNT does to Army again. But even Houston with their All American nose tackle and normally solid linebackers couldn't stop them. We were playing without our two leading tacklers and that probably caused the long run up the middle. Our best OLB, who is very important in containing the outside pitch, had to play in the middle.

What is more important is that they couldn't stop us, even with the sacks. On that last drive I was pretty confident after the first first down and what we had been able to do all game.

According to Times -- most teams get 7 possessions per game against Navy ( not sure I believe that) but we had 11. Defense did what it needed to do for us to win. We took Navy out of their comfort zone-- stopped the option many time but got burned on passes - so be it. What tickles me is how we hung 48 on Navy, fumbled on 1 yard line and no one talks about firing Navy d coach coach. Doubt many folks think about cause and effect of hurry up offense-- been thorn in side since Dykes even with NFL talent. Our defense could look a lot better with ball control- low scoring boring football. I like our brand of offense and realize it Always puts abnormal pressure on teams who use it-- Cal- TT- WK etc. So folks will think I am ok with Defense-- no, just take the time to try and understand why spread offenses tends to put so much pressure on defense... 27 wins in 3 yrs . Most wins over any 4 years in Tech history and someone wants to fire somebody after every game ( even special teams ). So many posters smarter than Coach

From TNS today - an indirect quote from Holtz:, Holtz said "he thought the defense played well."
Baker ain't going nowhere. Holtz will blame this years pathetic defense on lack of experience.

Wrong. Not even close. Holtz is 31-22 (58.5%). You of all people should know that's not the best. 71-74 was 44-4 (91.7%). The 1996-99 teams were 30-15 (66.7%)

Pretty good post. No, I'm not as happy with our defense as you seem to be, but I agree with your "big picture" assessment of our team and our program. It is telling that we're all so quick to criticize the LA Tech's defense for giving up 459 yds of offense and 25 First downs, but nobody criticizes Navy for giving up 497 yds of offense and 31 First downs.

I do have a question about Jared Craft's FUMBLE inside the Navy 3-yd line yesterday. Didn't Craft lose another fumble inside an opponent's 5 yd line earlier this season? I'm almost certain that he did. And if that's the case, the message here should be to NOT give the ball to Craft inside the opponents 5-yd line EVER again.

Can't compare the old Div II days (71-73) and he did say wins not winning per centage. Last I looked 31 was more than 30.

This thread is about a full body of work, that being the defense, not about the game specifically. The praise has been dished out, and rightfully so, about what a great game it was in other threads, and how pleased most of us are with the season and Holtz in general. I think he has done a wonderful job myself, but the defense has been the bad apple in the cart all year.

No, he said in the history of Tech. I think 71-74 is within the history of Tech. Furthermore, the 96-99 years were with 11 game schedules except for 1998 when we played Nebraska in that pre-season bowl. I would speculate that if those teams had 12 game schedules and bowl games, they would have easily exceeded 31 wins.

    Re: Fire Baker - NOW

That's college football. Two years ago we had the #1 passing defense in the nation. The situation changes DRASTICALLY from year to year due to personnel and experience. We lose only 1 DL this year and we get back 6-2 320 DT run-stuffer Courtney Wallace. Our DL may be scarey good next season.

Until then- enjoy and be thankful for this 'rebuilding season'!
