Doesn't the firing show that it was a demand? You can't know whether or not someone's veiled threat is legit until they follow through.

And at a minimum this is grossly unethical and improper.

Comey has already answered the question. Trump has answered the question. You and the other haters have chosen to believe Trump was lying, but expect Comey to alter his statement to say he KNEW that Trump MEANT for him to break the law.

The firing is evidence it was a threat, but it is the threat itself would be an obstruction - as would be the firing.

You assume he was fired over what was discussed. Do you really believe he fired him over that? He fired him over his handling of the Russia investigation which is a totally different matter than evolved months later.

Wow. You should reread the statement, in particular the part where Comey said "I had understood the President to be requesting..."

Where are you getting your bad info?

I think you know the difference in a request and a demand.

Trump gave serveral reasons for firing him and Flynn was part of the Russian investigation. So even saying it was about Russia doesn't mean it wasn't about Flynn - that statement isn't a denial. In any event, Trump's conflicting tweets and statements make it seem as if he is giving pretextual reasons. If he had a good reason he wouldn't have first blamed it in on the recommendations of he Assistant AG. This will all be considered when evaluating the firing aspect of the obstruction. If the request was intended as a threat (regardless of whether he changed his mind and fired him for a different proper reason) that is an obstruction as well. No follow-through is required from a threat.

A request by someone that has the authority to fire you and has made overtures regarding your lack of job security and his demand for loyalty might just be a demand. You are smarter than you are pretending right now.

...and so are you. You've stated many times the traits of Trump. None of your prior rants regarding Trump involve tact or "beating around the bush". Suddenly you believe he was being sly and issuing a veiled threat. You know that's not the way he operates.

I believe he fired him because he "needed loyalty" and he didn't think he'd get it from Comey.

But the most concerning thing about all this is the sheer stupidity to put himself in a position where this could be laid at his feet. This isn't the MSM or some evil Clinton conspiracy. This is happening because he was arrogant and ignorant of processes and procedures.

Trump is his own worst enemy.

I agree on the reason he was fired. I believe he was testing Comey in this setting. When he saw later that Comey was all in on the anti-Trump wagon train, he axed him.

No he is not a polished Washingtonian who always looks to both ways. He is a successful businessman who has not figured out how to work a system that is probably impossible to work.

We agreed long ago that he was his own worst enemy, but he is fighting many more than any POTUS has even had to.

It was thinly veiled. He was treading a little more carefully because he knew what he was doing was wrong. He was feeling him out, for sure. Leaning into him to see if he could get him to do what he wanted while demonstrating his leverage. I am sure it is one of his negotiating techniques he thinks is so great.

Why can't you just admit Trump is an unethical liar?

I keep reading folks say this, but I'm not so sure. Have y'all forgotten how Bush was treated post "hanging chad"? I think the difference is the way that Bush handled it. He didn't give them any more ammo than he had to (via his "way" with words).

Trump could accomplish SO MUCH MORE if he didn't insist on getting into pissing matches constantly. I know that SOME of it is planned to divert attention, but he's reached a level of diminishing returns. I don't know if he refuses to be advised or if his advisors are crap, but he's giving the MSM and the left all they need to insure he's constantly battling them.

Thank God the dems are a dumpster fire right now.

Whatever negotiating techniques he has work. He has never had to play politics before, but he also has not gotten where he is be being a mafia thug like so many in Washington are now.

Why is it important to you that Trump is a liar when you know almost every elected SOB up there is to some extent? None of them are "ethical". You hate Trump first and foremost.
