That seems to be the problem with the breed. Not like Labs and most other pure breeds, they seem to be too well bred (like the Washington establishment not as many forks in the tree ) I know there are many Bulldawg fans who own the preferred breed and disagree about the "issues". They need to take up the cause.

As stated in the past on this board, maybe it's time to look at other types of bulldog breeds like the "American" bulldog. They look strong and athletic. We could do a rebranding of our costume mascot and bulldog logo.

You can go back a few years and find the thread where we discussed this before when Champ had to be replaced. I strongly advocated looking into rescue, especially since we were following up the heat stroke tragedy, I was frowned upon heavily on here for suggesting it.

Should Tech really want to make a statement that will make for good news and publicity that can do nothing but help us, look into rescue and adoption. As for all who think that it is a must for us to do "proper vetting" in order to find a bulldog with the right genetics so as not to be prone to many of the inherent health problems they have, think some more. This breed is a wonderfully love-able breed, but there is never a guarantee, no matter how much vetting you do, that those health problems will be avoided. You can reduce your chances, but not guarantee with any kind of certainty of no health problems. You can take a perfect set of parents and have a recessive gene show up in their litter, it just happens.

Many of you on here own or know of the breed first hand, those of you who own did your best to get a pup with the best genetics so you would not have to worry, but you still worry because that chance of a defect is always there.

Does Tech have a replacement waiting to step up immediately? Should they not, why not look into the rescue route, it could be very rewarding for all.

    Another University/group looking at this--

Not necessarily advocating what these folks are stating in their petition, but this is not the first time this has been brought up. Give it some thought.

The problem is with the University, not the bulldog. In my post above I listed 11 over DI universities who run live English bulldog mascot programs without many of the issues we are having.

Our brand is the English bulldog, and I wouldn't want an American bulldog anyway near kids. And that still wouldn't solve the problem of the University not properly running a live mascot program.

Lovely dog there. But I don't think I'd want us to change dog breeds. Just for the sake of consistency.

The last one lasted only a little over 3 years until they retired him. Did we get him as a grown dog or as a puppy? If we got him as a puppy, would a rescue even last that long? Did he have a health complication or is this just a decision for the dog to not be overstressed by games and activities?

We got him as a puppy.

The reason for his retirement was never made public. All we got was a vague facebook message posted on the University's facebook account last Fall. Not a word since except for Guice's strange "woof" response yesterday.

IIRC a rescue dog was discussed last time, but it was deemed too risky.

    Olde English Bulldog!

A little taller but similar look to current bulldogs, basically looks like a bulldog with a little bit of boxer.

Issue is variability since they aren't an established/"Official" breed.

At this point the breed is irrelevant because we dont have any dog at all.

Olde English Bulldog is definitely the way to go!

They are recognized by the UKC and there is also the IOEBA, which is the "standard" registry for the breed.

From the picture above it looks like an American Bulldog.

Looks kinda like a mix of the Old English and American Bulldog.
