Normally, being that spread out is a good thing. But I think quality has suffered.

Why so many go to SLU? Is it a good school?

It's really just a glorified JUCO (much like ULM) located between New Orleans and Baton Rouge.

I never understood that either. Hammond is not a big city and it's not far from BR or NO. McNeese is at least in a fairly big city as is ULM. There is nothing really close to NSU. Was SLU ever just a JUCO like ULM? Nichols was.

Not a good school compared to other options in state. The reasons people go there are because it has lower standards while still supplying a college experience. As someone from the Nola area, I had many friends that didn't want to go to UNO because they wanted to move out of their house. But they also didn't have the grades to get into LSU. So they chose Southeastern since it's not too far, they can get a college life experience, and and they can get accepted. It's in the middle between the biggest metropolitan areas of the state and thus they get a lot of students like this.

It gives the false impression that NSU is healthy as a university. As online offerings from larger schools increase it will dramatically cut into NSU's enrollment. As has been posted on this board over the past several years the number of students actually attending classes in Natchitoches is shockingly low.

I don't have a problem with any of what they're doing. I just don't want them running to the state for huge sums of money to save the school when the bottom drops out.

And after a semester or two they can transfer to LSU as a transfer student. SLU is used like many Texas A&M students use Blinn JC.

People in the greater Baton Rouge area choose to go to Southeastern because it is significantly cheaper than LSU and getting to it from Ascension and Livingston, especially, is not appreciably more difficult. I presume the same would be true for all those living on the northshore vs. New Orleans education options. It is really that simple.

Exactly. Perspective is so important when discussing enrollment.

This year's breakdown hasn't been published yet, but here are some facts about NWST's enrollment from Fall 2016:

    - NWST students taking online courses: 74.55%

    - NWST enrollment on campus in Natchitoches: 3,910 (39.82% of total enrollment)

    - NWST enrollment on campus in Alexandria, Leesville, Shreveport combined: 1,016 (10.35% of total enrollment)

    - NWST enrollment distance only: 4,893 (49.83% of total enrollment)

    - NWST students living on campus: 1,308

Also, NWST is quietly trying to get state taxpayers to buy them a new $35 million basketball arena.

Southeastern is definitely considered LSU starter school. Have friends and family who have enrolled to get grades up, save money, stay closer to home their first year etc. Honestly can't think of any who actually ended up at LSU. I know a few that just dropped out when they realized LSU wasn't going to happen.
