SMU finished 5-7 this year, with a disappointing 27-24 loss at Tulsa yesterday. But, the Mustangs won 5 of their last 9 games, and had some good wins. SMU seemed to get better later in the season. These 2018 results for Dykes mirror exactly what he posted in his first year at LA Tech in 2010 when Tech finished 5-7, and won 4 of its last 7 games, after a poor 1-4 start. Not on the reported short list I heard. He failed at his previous P5 stop. Plus we are the only school to hire sons of former coaches.
SMU is a tough gig. But if he stays, and Skippy stays here, wouldn't surprise me to see SMU leapfrog us. Maybe we'll get them in a bowl...but this time Dykes will have been there awhile. Can you say "payback!"
There will be no changes in athletics this year at Tech. But the process starts if we don't win our bowl game this year. Whether we win or lose, season ticket sales & LTAC will be noticeably down next year and the heat will be on. Losing the bowl game will have an even greater effect on season ticket renewals and so more heat quicker.
For our overall athletics situation the change that needs to be made is with the AD. It will be the new AD's job to get Skip to get his act together or make the coaching change. How Skip gets handled can be a positive thing within the ranks of potential candidates. Basically, 'Skip, this is business and there's a new Sheriff in town. Change is coming and you'll be a part of it, one way or another. You can change or you can be the next Les Miles'.
Candidates will know the circumstances and respect a program that gives Skip 'one more chance'. It likely indicates they'll get time and latitude to get their system in place and working.
So we're where we are until next summer at the earliest. With the very unlikely possibilities that someone hires TMac or Skip away.
Given all of their off the field issues over the past decade, Skip would be a good hire at UNC. He's an experienced head coach with a lot connections in that part of the country. He could bring stability in a short period of time to a bad situation.
I've spent time on business in both North Carolina and South Carolina over the past few months, and when I've mentioned Tech Skip's name comes up every time. He and Lou took over a bad situation at USC and turned things around in just a few years. And Skip is really well thought of in North Carolina for his run at ECU. It's going to be interesting to see where they go in a search.
The CUSA board is reporting that Mike Sanford was fired today. I don't know if this is true or not.

Beating a team who has gone to 5 straight bowl games was not enough? Do they know this group of LaTech seniors has won more games than any group of seniors in the history of Tech football? Skip should have sent Sanford his BS talking point list.
Dang! usually schools fire their coach when they lose to Tech, not when they beat us!

Charlotte fired Brad Lambert a few days ago. This despite Charlotte improving from 1-11 in 2017, to 5-7 in 2018, including wins over FAU (27-24) yesterday, and Southern Miss, WKU and Old Dominion in CUSA.

I feel like that should have bought him at least half a season...
Truth is, Lambert should have been fired last year when Charlotte finished 1-11. But the female AD got fired last year instead, because she wouldn't fire Lambert. Now the new AD wants a fresh start. Something LA Tech could sorely use.
A fresh start is often a good thing. LA Tech doesn't owe Skip a job. And I'm sure there are a lot of good coaches on the market that can win more than 7 games a year for us.
