Utah Department of Agriculture investigates mysterious seeds sent from China to Tooele


TOOELE, Utah — Over the past few weeks, people in Utah have been reporting mysterious packages they’ve been receiving in the mail from China.

Lori Culley, who lives in Tooele, said she was excited to find two small packages in her mailbox on Tuesday. Although most of the writing on the outside was in Chinese, the label indicated there would be earrings inside.

“I opened them up and they were seeds,” Culley said. “Obviously they’re not jewelry!”

Culley couldn’t understand why she would be receiving mislabeled seeds from China in the mail, but at first she didn’t think much of it.

She posted about the strange incident on Facebook, where some of her friends reminded her plants and seeds are strictly regulated in Utah.


FOX 13 has confirmed the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food will likely team up with Customs and Border Protection agents to investigate.

An employee with the Utah Department of Agriculture picked up the seeds within a few hours of learning about the incident.

Culley said she was surprised to learn the same thing has happened to “at least 40 people” who either publicly commented or privately responded to her post. Most of them live in Tooele.

Now Culley wonders how many people might have been so curious about the seeds that they decided to plant them.

“There was an article that I found in the UK saying this has been happening over there, and they are bad seeds, they are invasive,” Culley said. “I hope that it’s nothing too serious… don’t throw them in the garbage. Don’t plant them. Don’t touch them.”

Employees with the Utah Department of Agriculture encouraged anyone who received mysterious seeds in the mail to please give them a call so they can pick up the mail for further investigation.

“I mean there’s even a possibility it could be a drug or something!” Culley said. “It just smells – it doesn’t sound right.”

The Better Business Bureau is planting a different idea.

Jane Rupp, president of BBB’s Utah chapter, told FOX 13 the incidents could just be a scam known as “brushing” where some companies will send you a product so they can post a fake review in your name.

The trade deal was huge for American farmers and would have boosted our economy even more. Many of the "Free Trade" Rinos were against it. Obviously China found a way to solve being backed into a corner.

I support any POTUS trying to maintain world peace and to create at least, cordial, cooperative relationships with any and all nations willing to talk. That is definitely for the greater good. President Trump has tried, and is still trying to develop workable relationships with otherwise hostile nations. I commend him for it. Yeah, I think a president John Bolton would launch nukes within 5 mins of his being sworn in as POTUS and then say of those on the receiving end, "Did you say something?" But, I'm not sure that's a path we really want to go down...

Trump is a master negotiator. He knows when to "blow smoke up the skirts of his adversaries." I am no great negotiator (although I did take the Chester L. Karrass course on negotiating) and even I know to keep my opponent off balance, guessing, on what I really want and what is truly my bottom line. Duh! that is taught in Negotiating 101 basic course.

Obviously, it's a VERY GOOD thing Trump is POTUS and not you or John Bolton. No one really wins a nuclear war...

BTW, here's a trivia quiz for all you war hawks out there....How many nuclear devices have been detonated on the planet since the advent of that technology? Don't cheat and Bing it.

I'm not a Bolton fan, never really have been. Didn't understand why Trump appointed him to NSC. Bolton has a history of beating war drums. If Bolton had his way, we would be at war with China, North Korea, Iran, possibly all 3 at the same time. I'm surprised that you would be so quick to give him a pass considering his positions he has taken.

I agree with everything you said about Bolton. That doesn’t mean he’s wrong about Trump’s China policy. I don’t have to accept his position to agree with his assessment of Trump’s.

I'm not the president. You're the one who called him the master, and yet, he can't even get the most basic things done when he controls the house and the senate. Trump is a legend in the minds of his fan boys, but President Xi has taken him to the cleaners. Trump still doesn't know how tariffs work!

Therefore, he (and they) want Planned Parenthood to continue to thrive since they murder more black babies (as a % of the population) than any other race. Dealing with reality is tough when you’ve been in la la land for 3.5 years. If Trump were the master you claim he is, he would’ve managed not to lose McCain’s vote on Obamacare. He would’ve managed to look more fiscally conservative than Obama. He would’ve managed not to bungle the COVID response. And, most importantly, he would’ve grown his party.

He couldn’t manage any of that because he’s not a master. He’s a shock jock who can’t stand to be told no.

It’ll all beat out in Nov. if you’re right, he’ll easily be re-elected. If I’m right, he’s toast.
