It was pretty long and there's a lot to respond to. Ultimately, I think it boils down to this: is a short term loss worth a long term gain. I don't think "conservative" populism is a good thing. I think it's anti-free market. I also don't think you can call someone a champion of small government when they increase the debt and deficit the way that Trump has (over and above what was already an unsustainable debt load). Beyond all that, the republican party is shrinking. Trump has not grown the party and that is one reason the polls look like they do. Even before COVID his approval ratings were abysmal.

It's not illogical to say you want the party to lose so that it can ultimately be healed. Trump has changed the party and there are plenty of non-populist conservatives who would never join the current GOP (why I left).

Beyond that, the video was an exercise in calling his selected NeverTrumpers hypocrites. That's fine, but it's not a cogent argument. Maybe they were wrong about GWB, but right about Trump?

The guys that better represent my position are David French, Jonah Goldberg, and Steve Hayes. That said, the project Lincoln guys are doing a great job of showing the hypocrisy of the new GOP (well, mainly the converted old GOP holdovers like LadyG, Cruz, Rubio, and the like).

It's not illogical to say you want the party to lose so that it can ultimately be healed. Trump has changed the party and there are plenty of non-populist conservatives who would never join the current GOP (why I left).

Interesting. I think I could get on board with this kind of thinking. Might just be the kind of commitment we need to make things change.

Like....I hope the dems win all of the Senate races so they get a super majority and can impeach all of Trump's court appointments. Especially that evil Kavanaugh. Then we can get some REAL things accomplished and maybe 100% of all black pregnancies would end in abortion instead of just 50%. I think once people saw the genocide happening they may be ready to address this kind of thing in a different manner. Just line the streets with dead fetuses and they'll come around. Let the healing begin.

I hope the corporate tax is raised to a punitive level and the EPA becomes even more aggressive under Biden to make more American businesses move overseas to stay competitive. The resulting chaos should go a long way toward "healing" our economic system when people see they have the right to freely trade with the nations that took our jobs, but they don't have the money to do so.

I hope the riots that are happening in the country eventually lead to all out war. When we have a clear victor we can start "healing" around the winner. Defunding the police and encouraging mob rule should push this along nicely.

The most important thing is that everything is EXACTLY the way I want it when all is said and done, because mine is the only viewpoint that matters and it is better to see everything torn down than for me to have to compromise ANY of my values. If I have to compromise any of them, I'd rather just compromise them all and start from scratch when everything is destroyed.

I share the confusion of one of the commenters on that article. Is the payroll tax thing meant to be stimulus money, but the expectation is that if Trump is re-elected he'll make it permanent (or try) but if he isn't people would like have to pay it back? I'm not totally sure that's what he's pitching (sometimes it's a little hard to tell with him, he's not exactly what I'd call "precise").
