Not exactly. Viruses mutate very easily and it is the replication in a host cell that causes mutation. Thus, the real driver of mutation in viruses is transmission itself. The more people that get it, the more opportunity to mutate. The more opportunity to mutate, the more mutations, giving rise to more transmissible variants.

That is not to say it’s evolution isn’t Darwinian - it is. The viral mutations that lead to better replication will become the dominant one, all else being equal. It is at this stage, and after “immunity” (in this case meaning the presence of effective antibodies for the particular virus) across the population is high where the immunity allows for the preferential domination by variants that defeat this immunity.

But if you have the immunity, the virus is less likely to use YOU as the host that produces the new mutation in the first place.

I never just trust guvmint anything. Even when I allow them some leeway, benefit of the doubt, I do so with an eye on what's really happening behind the scene.

BTW, this is has conveniently not been mentioned, but isn't it amazing just how fast the whole process re: these vaccines, start to finish, including FDA approval, has all happened. In case you have been living in a cave for the past 50+ years, it has been widely known that the cost of pharmas (drugs) in this country has been all the guvmint red tape causing Big Pharma to spend $billions getting approval. The same drugs made IN AMERICA sell for pennies on the dollar elsewhere because other nations have trusted the pharma companies to produce effective/safe drugs. But here, OMG! the FDA and other agencies have put so many obstacles in the way it drives up the cost.

Well, well...looky here. Now the FDA has demonstrated it is possible to quickly and SAFELY produce a drug without all the stupid, senseless guvmint red tape. This is good and should from now on make it possible for new drugs to come to the market quickly and CHEAPLY here, as they have done for forever around the world. Ya see, when you seek one, you can find that ole silver lining

Yes, most of them are independent studies. And the CDC itself is usually referring to independent studies.

There are not thousands of doctors that disagree. It is just that social media amplifies crazy out-of-consensus opinions equally to those that represent well-founded research.

It was done so quickly because scientists developed an incredible mRNA platform over the past couple of decades that allows for very fast development of targeted vaccines. This technology has not been around very long but is based on very sound science.
